The restrictions are expected to remain in place until at least Tuesday, November 4, pending confirmation that the water is safe. Hospitality businesses have had to adapt quickly to the emergency. Jan Hagenouw, head of the Utrecht branch of Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN), said the sector is showing “remarkable flexibility.” Some establishments have begun rinsing glasses with Spa Rood mineral water, while others have stopped serving dishes like salads that require washing with tap water. At Utrecht University, all coffee machines in campus buildings have been shut down, although lectures and exams continue as planned. Meanwhile, coffee producer Douwe Egberts, headquartered in Utrecht and owned by JDE Peet’s, confirmed that its production “remains completely safe and operational.” The company said it has implemented additional measures, including disabling cold-water dispensers and setting up dedicated water stations, while continuing to follow Vitens’ guidance closely.

The water contamination has also triggered a rush on bottled water in local supermarkets. Shelves at Aldi, Jumbo, and Albert Heijn were emptied quickly as customers stocked up. Jumbo reported delivering 7,500 liters of water to regional stores in a single day, while Albert Heijn urged customers to stay calm and “avoid panic buying.”

According to a report by Nestlé Vietnam, the adoption of regenerative practices under the NESCAFÉ Plan has enabled farmers to save 40%–60% of irrigation water, reduce chemical fertilizers and pesticides by 20%, and significantly increase yields and income.

The initiative was highlighted during a seminar titled “The Role of Farmers in Regenerative Agriculture”, held on October 31 at the Nestlé Trị An factory in Dong Nai province, where more than 60 outstanding farmers and agricultural sustainability experts gathered to celebrate success stories from the program.

Binu Jacob, Managing Director of Nestlé Vietnam, stated during the event: “At Nestlé, people are at the heart of our sustainability journey. The NESCAFÉ Plan represents a long-term commitment to support farmers in implementing regenerative agriculture to enhance their income and quality of life.”

Jacob added that close cooperation with farmers is vital to building a more sustainable future for Vietnam’s coffee industry, reflecting Nestlé’s dedication to both environmental and social responsibility.

The event also featured a tour of the factory’s modern coffee processing facilities, where farmers learned about production technologies and the journey of Vietnamese coffee beans now exported to over 40 international markets, including Europe, Japan, South Korea, and the United States.

Farmers shared their experiences in adopting regenerative agriculture and digital farm management to improve soil health and productivity. Dao Duy Quynh, a farmer from Gia Lai province, said:

“The program completely changed how we work. We learned to farm in ways that protect the environment while increasing our income.”

Since its launch in 2011, the NESCAFÉ Plan has delivered more than 467,000 training sessions on sustainable coffee farming, provided improved seedlings to around 21,000 farmers annually, and distributed over 86 million high-yield, pest- and drought-resistant plants, helping rejuvenate over 86,000 hectares of aging coffee farms.

According to a Rabobank report seen by Reuters, the proposed changes — which include postponing enforcement deadlines and easing penalties — could undermine the financial incentives that originally drove agribusinesses to adopt deforestation-free practices ahead of schedule.

The current law requires exporters of coffee, cocoa, palm oil, soy, wood, and beef to the European Union to provide due-diligence statements proving that their products are not linked to deforestation.

Under the new proposal, large companies would begin compliance checks from June 30, 2026, while smaller firms with fewer than 50 employees would have until December 30, 2026 to submit their declarations.

Rabobank analyst Marcela Marini emphasized that the delayed enforcement could erode the competitive advantage of those who acted early: “Companies that invested ahead of time were aiming for preferential access to the European market. The absence of fines and delayed enforcement weakens the incentive for sustainability premiums.”

The report also warned that the revision may disrupt global coffee supply chains, especially as the industry intensifies efforts toward traceability and environmental transparency.

The European Parliament is expected to review the proposal in the coming weeks. If approved, the regulation will still take effect in 2025, but with softer requirements and extended timelines — a move that some experts fear could dilute Europe’s commitment to fighting deforestation and impact the global push for sustainable coffee production.

Uganda is forecasting a major rise in coffee production, projecting a 15% increase for the 2025/2026 crop year (October–September), as new coffee plantations begin to yield harvests, according to Gerald Kyalo, Commissioner of the Coffee Department at the Ministry of Agriculture.

The East African country—Africa’s leading coffee exporter—expects to harvest 558,000 metric tons, equivalent to 9.3 million 60-kilogram bags, up from 8.1 million bags in the previous season. The projection represents a 14.8% rise, or 72,000 tons more than last year’s output of 486,000 tons.

“The major reason is increased planting. Many farmers have planted coffee which we anticipate will come into production this year and will inevitably push up exports as well,” Kyalo told Reuters.

Over the past years, the government of President Yoweri Museveni has distributed free coffee seedlings to both new and existing farmers to expand their acreage or open up new farmland. Additionally, the government has been providing free fertilisers to help the country reach its ambitious target of producing 30 million bags annually by 2030.

Uganda predominantly grows the Robusta variety, though Arabica is also cultivated in highland regions. Production and export volumes have been climbing steadily, boosted by global coffee price gains and maturing new trees that have begun producing fruit.

In the 12 months to August 2025, Uganda earned $2.2 billion from coffee exports, up 57% from the previous year—a record performance that underscores the sector’s growing strength. Since the country exports nearly 95% of its coffee, the larger 2025/2026 crop is expected to further boost export revenues and consolidate Uganda’s position as a key player in the global coffee market.

Brazil’s Timbro Enters Coffee Export Market Amid Sector Shifts

Brazilian trading company Timbro has officially added coffee to its export portfolio, identifying strong potential for growth in a market reshaped by volatility and record-high prices over the past year.

Timbro, already one of Brazil’s key sugar exporters, also trades a wide range of products including iron ore, cotton, aircraft, cars, and heavy machinery, and manages import operations for Amazon.

“I believe we entered the coffee market at the right time — a very complicated moment for the sector,” said Caio Melles, partner at Timbro, in an interview with Reuters.

The company, which reported 18 billion reais ($3.3 billion) in revenue last year, sees an opportunity to fill the gap left by traditional traders struggling with market volatility. According to Melles, the coffee sector currently lacks players capable of tracking production, pricing, and ensuring delivery, opening new room for agile companies like Timbro.

Although Timbro has long engaged in financial operations with cooperatives and large producers, the 2025 crop year marks its first full physical coffee operation, a move the company had not previously disclosed.

Initially, coffee volumes will remain modest — around 80,000 bags of 60 kg each — as Timbro adopts a cautious entry strategy.

Expansion Beyond Coffee

Founded in 2010 by Jorge Guinle and Bruno Russo, Timbro began as an import-focused firm before rapidly diversifying its portfolio. The company has recorded significant success in sugar, increasing traded volumes from 300,000 tonnes in 2018 to 2 million tonnes in 2024.

In 2025, Timbro expanded its international presence with the opening of an office in Dubai, a strategic hub to strengthen relationships with global clients and enhance efficiency across time zones. It is also extending operations in Asia to “operate on Chinese time,” reflecting China’s importance as a key importer of Brazilian commodities.

Currently, 65–70% of Timbro’s business is export-oriented, while 30–35% focuses on imports.

Diversification into Grains and Minerals

Timbro maintains a smaller footprint in soybean and corn exports, Brazil’s leading agricultural commodities. “We’re doing a few soybean and corn shipments, maybe half a dozen of each this year — still very limited,” Melles said, noting that grain operations require integrated logistics to achieve profitability. The company is now considering logistics partnerships to expand in this segment.

In the steel and minerals division, Timbro expects to export over 1 million tonnes to China and Europe this year and has begun due diligence for new mining assets as part of its expansion strategy.

The patent, filed in March 2025 and published in August, represents a major step forward in the UAE’s scientific contribution to climate innovation, tackling both carbon pollution and solid waste through a single, sustainable solution.

From Coffee Cup to Carbon Capture

The new method combines spent coffee grounds (SCG), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) — a widely used plastic in bottles and packaging — and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as a chemical activator.
Through co-pyrolysis at an eco-friendly activation temperature of 600 °C, the process yields activated carbon with an exceptionally high surface area and fine pore structure, making it highly effective in trapping CO₂ molecules.

“What begins with a Starbucks coffee cup and a discarded plastic water bottle can become a powerful tool in the fight against climate change through the production of activated carbon,”
said Dr. Haif Aljomard, lead inventor of the technology.

Dr. Aljomard emphasized that the process supports both waste valorization and climate change mitigation, turning two abundant waste streams into a high-performance carbon adsorbent that can reduce industrial emissions.

Circular and Cost-Effective

The researchers highlighted that the production cost of this material is remarkably low, thanks to the availability and affordability of its raw ingredients — coffee waste and post-consumer plastic.

Professor Chaouki Ghenai, co-inventor and expert in Sustainable and Renewable Energy at the University of Sharjah, said the invention exemplifies circular economy principles by giving waste a new life.

“Transforming spent coffee grounds and plastic waste into high-quality activated carbon delivers economic, social, and environmental benefits,” he said.
“This innovation not only prevents harmful waste from ending up in landfills but also provides a sustainable resource for carbon reduction technologies.”

Broad Industrial Applications

The patented activated carbon has diverse industrial uses, extending far beyond CO₂ capture. It can be applied in:

Water and air purification

Groundwater and wastewater treatment

Gas and solvent purification

Natural gas processing and emission control

Unprecedented Scientific Discovery: Coffee Reduces the Risk of Head and Neck Cancers

A new global study has revealed that drinking coffee, particularly in higher amounts, may significantly reduce the risk of developing head and neck cancers, one of the most common forms of cancer worldwide. Published in the Cancer journal by the American Cancer Society, the research represents one of the largest analyses ever conducted on this topic and offers new insights into how coffee and tea consumption affect cancer risk.

The study was carried out by an international team of researchers from the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology Consortium (INHANCE), bringing together data from fourteen large-scale case-control studies conducted across Europe, North America, and Latin America. In total, the analysis included 9,548 individuals diagnosed with head and neck cancers and 15,783 individuals without cancer, making it the most comprehensive dataset of its kind. Researchers used advanced statistical models to assess associations between beverage consumption and cancer risk, taking into account known influencing factors such as age, smoking, alcohol intake, diet, and education level.

According to the results, people who drank more than four cups of caffeinated coffee per day had a 17 percent lower risk of developing any form of head and neck cancer compared to non-coffee drinkers. The protective effect was even stronger for certain cancers: the risk of oral cavity cancer was 30 percent lower, and the risk of oropharyngeal cancerthe type that develops in the area behind the mouthwas 22 percent lower among heavy coffee drinkers. The study also found that drinking three to four cups of coffee daily was associated with a 41 percent reduction in hypopharyngeal cancer, which affects the lower part of the throat. These findings suggest a clear dose-response relationship, where higher coffee consumption corresponds to a lower likelihood of developing these cancers.

Interestingly, the study also observed that decaffeinated coffee showed similar protective trends, particularly against oral cavity cancer. Individuals who consumed even small amounts of decaffeinated coffee had a significantly reduced risk, suggesting that the beneficial compounds in coffee are not limited to caffeine. Researchers highlighted that coffee contains a complex mix of bioactive substances, including polyphenols, chlorogenic acids, trigonelline, cafestol, and kahweolcompounds that have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties known to inhibit cancer cell growth and reduce oxidative stress.

Tea, on the other hand, showed a more complex relationship. Moderate tea consumption of up to one cup per day was linked to a small protective effect, reducing overall head and neck cancer risk by around 9 percent and hypopharyngeal cancer risk by 27 percent. However, participants who drank more than one cup of tea daily appeared to have a 38 percent higher risk of developing laryngeal cancer, which affects the voice box. The authors of the study suggested that this could be due to tea’s content of theophylline, a compound known to relax the lower esophageal sphincter and potentially increase acid reflux, a condition associated with a higher risk of laryngeal cancer.

Head and neck cancer encompasses malignancies of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx, and remains a serious global health concern. According to global cancer statistics, these cancers accounted for approximately 745,000 new cases and 364,000 deaths in 2020. Although incidence rates have declined in some high-income countries, oropharyngeal cancers have increased, largely linked to human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. Meanwhile, low- and middle-income nations continue to bear a growing burden due to limited access to early diagnosis and treatment. Given this backdrop, the discovery of potential protective lifestyle factors such as coffee consumption could have important implications for prevention efforts worldwide.

The research team, led by Dr. Yuan-Chin Amy Lee from the University of Utah School of Medicine and the Huntsman Cancer Institute, emphasized that while the study establishes strong associations, it does not prove direct causation. The findings are observational and should be interpreted with caution, as factors such as the type of coffee, brewing method, and geographic differences in beverage habits could influence results. Nonetheless, the consistency of the associations across multiple populations and cancer subsites strengthens the evidence that coffee may play a beneficial role in reducing cancer risk.

The authors also pointed out that coffee’s health benefits are not limited to its caffeine content. Laboratory studies have shown that the natural compounds found in both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee can inhibit cancer cell proliferation, trigger apoptosis (cell death), and reduce inflammation, all of which are key mechanisms in preventing tumor growth. They noted that these effects were evident regardless of participants’ age, gender, or smoking and drinking habits. Even after controlling for major risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol useboth of which are strongly linked to head and neck cancersthe protective pattern of coffee consumption remained.

However, the researchers called for more in-depth investigations to understand regional differences, especially in countries where coffee and tea types and preparation methods vary significantly. The oxidation process used in black tea production lowers its catechin content, potentially diminishing its antioxidant capacity. Its combination of antioxidants, polyphenols, and other natural compounds appears to contribute not only to energy and alertness but also to long-term health protection. Long Beach, California, came in third, driven by an active café scene and strong consumer interest in coffee searches online. Residents spend about $171 per year on coffee, and the city ranks high in ownership of espresso machines and grinders.
