Intense Competition at the 2025 UAE National Cup Tasters Championship

Abu Dhabi – Qahwa World

The 2025 UAE National Cup Tasters Championship continued for the second consecutive day as part of Global Food Week, held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). The event brought together 84 experts, including some of the country’s finest baristas, tasters, and coffee professionals representing leading cafés and roasteries across the UAE. The competition witnessed fierce rivalry and sharp fluctuations in contestant rankings based on performance.

Organized by the Specialty Coffee Association of the UAE (SCA UAE), the championship is one of the country’s most prominent coffee competitions, bringing together top professionals and coffee enthusiasts to test their ability to identify flavors and subtle distinctions among different coffee profiles, in line with international standards set by World Coffee Events.

Saeed Al Balushi, Board Member of the Specialty Coffee Association of the UAE, said that the competition is far from easy, noting that participants undergo rigorous sensory tests to evaluate coffee based on flavor, aroma, and consistency, with the goal of determining the most accurate and professional taster.

He added that winning the title is no simple task; even highly skilled participants must demonstrate exceptional professionalism and deep expertise in coffee tasting and sensory analysis. The challenge lies in identifying the best cup among 16 coffees sourced from different countries, with varying roast levels and processing methods — a task that demands extraordinary precision and focus.

Al Balushi emphasized that victory requires not only knowledge and experience but also strong emotional control, heightened sensory awareness, and total concentration, without distractions that could affect performance.

He concluded by confirming that the championship winner, to be announced tomorrow at the closing ceremony, will represent the UAE at the World Cup Tasters Championship, scheduled to take place in Thailand in May 2026.

Coca-Cola Reassesses Its $5 Billion Coffee Investment

Dubai – Qahwa World

Coca-Cola is reconsidering its coffee strategy after its $5.1 billion acquisition of Costa Coffee failed to deliver the expected results.

CEO James Quincey admitted during the company’s recent earnings call that the “investment hypothesis didn’t work out as we expected.” The beverage giant had hoped Costa would drive significant growth beyond its traditional retail outlets, but that expansion has not materialized.

Despite the setback, Quincey emphasized that coffee remains a “super attractive category,” noting that Coca-Cola continues to invest in Costa’s UK operations and in expanding automated coffee machines under the Costa brand. However, he acknowledged that the business “hasn’t yet created the multiplier effect we were looking for.”

Coca-Cola is currently “reflecting” on how to position its coffee business moving forward. Reports from Reuters in August indicated that the company may be exploring a potential sale of Costa Coffee, though Quincey did not comment on that possibility.

Coca-Cola’s stock rose about 4% on Tuesday following its announcement that net sales increased by 5% to $12.46 billion in the third quarter.

The company’s coffee ventures also include experiments with Coca-Cola Coffee, a beverage blending the brand’s classic soda with coffee extract.

Starbucks Unveils AI Barista That Predicts Coffee Orders Before Customers Arrive

Dubai – Qahwa World

Starbucks is integrating artificial intelligence into its daily operations as part of a broader plan to enhance efficiency and customer experience. CEO Brian Niccol confirmed the company’s AI-driven direction during Salesforce’s Dreamforce 2025 event in San Francisco, according to Fortune.

Niccol explained that Starbucks is developing internal technologies designed to help baristas prepare drinks in real time — and potentially predict customers’ orders before they even place them. While the company is still in the learning and experimentation phase, Niccol emphasized that AI is already helping Starbucks pursue its ambition of becoming “the world’s great customer service company again.”

The “Green Dot Assist”

One of the company’s most advanced tools so far is called Green Dot Assist, described as a “barista assistant.” Piloted in June and now rolled out to additional stores, it operates as a chatbot-like system that supports store leaders in day-to-day operations — including guidance on drink preparation, troubleshooting equipment issues, and managing workflow.

A Starbucks spokesperson told TODAY.com that the tool is intended to assist employees rather than replace them, helping make their work smoother and more efficient.

Predictive Coffee Ordering

Niccol also noted that the Starbucks app remains central to the company’s AI strategy. He outlined a future scenario where customers might not even need to open the app — instead, they could simply say, “Hey, I need my Starbucks order. I’ll be there in 10 minutes,” and the AI system would have the drink ready upon arrival.

Despite these advancements, Niccol clarified that Starbucks is “not near” the stage of using a fully robotic workforce. The company, he said, remains committed to a “real craft” experience by having more human partners in stores to serve customers personally rather than relying on automation.

The Broader AI Movement in Coffee

Starbucks is not alone in exploring AI integration. At Hudson Yards in New York City, an AI-powered robotic barista named Jarvis is already preparing drinks for customers — even engaging with them via gestures and conversation before requesting a tip.

As AI technology continues to evolve, coffee chains around the world are experimenting with automation to strike a balance between innovation and preserving the artistry that defines the coffee experience.

CQI Launches Global Survey to Shape the Future of Coffee Quality

Dubai – Qahwa World

The Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) has announced the launch of its Global Priorities Assessment Survey, an open invitation to coffee professionals worldwide to help shape the organization’s future direction. The survey seeks insights from across the coffee value chain to identify the most pressing challenges and the most promising opportunities facing the global coffee sector today.

This new initiative follows CQI’s recent transition of the Q Program to the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) earlier this month — a milestone that marks the beginning of a new chapter for the institute. As CQI redefines its mission for the years ahead, it is turning to the very community it serves to guide its next steps.

“CQI is entering a new phase in its work, and we would like to ask for your help in identifying the most pressing challenges and most promising opportunities we face as a sector,” the organization stated in its official announcement.

A Collaborative Effort for the Coffee Community

The Global Priorities Assessment Survey invites producers, traders, roasters, educators, donors, and project partners to evaluate various aspects of CQI’s work — including its technical expertise, educational offerings, credibility, affordability, and project outcomes. Participants are also encouraged to share their perspectives on how CQI can continue improving the quality of coffee globally and supporting the livelihoods of those who produce it.

Through this initiative, CQI aims to gain a deeper understanding of community priorities and use the results to inform future educational programs, research initiatives, and international partnerships. The collected insights will serve as a roadmap for how CQI continues pursuing its mission of improving coffee quality and the lives of those who make it possible.

Available in Nine Languages

To ensure inclusivity, the survey is available in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Swahili, and Indonesian, enabling broad participation from coffee professionals around the world.

Questions in the survey cover topics such as:

The quality and accessibility of CQI’s education programs

Affordability and value of CQI courses

The organization’s credibility and trustworthiness

The quality of its project work overseas

How CQI could better serve businesses and producers

Respondents can also provide open feedback on what they like most about CQI, what the organization could do more or less of, and what areas have the most room for improvement.

The Barista League Launches 2026 Season, Redefining Coffee Competitions Worldwide

Dubai – Qahwa World

The Barista League has announced its groundbreaking 2026 Season, introducing a completely new competition format that reimagines what a coffee championship can be. The new concept, built around three central pillars — Concept, Service, and Product — marks a radical departure from traditional competitions that prioritize technical precision. Instead, it challenges baristas to craft and deliver experiential coffee concepts that merge creativity, storytelling, and service excellence.

According to The Barista League 2026 Rules, baristas are described as “the gatekeepers to the coffee experience.” Their role goes beyond brewing — they are responsible for translating the stories, culture, and craftsmanship behind coffee into memorable experiences for consumers.

A New Era for Coffee Competitions

In the restructured scoring system, Concept and Service together account for 62% of the total score, while Product represents 38%. This shift places greater emphasis on innovation, communication, and guest experience. Competitors will design complete experiential concepts that guide audiences through a sensory journey, using the stage, sound, and lighting of The Barista League to bring their ideas to life.

“We want to see bold, creative service concepts that push the boundaries of what a coffee experience can be,” said Steven Moloney, founder of The Barista League. “This stage is a platform for baristas to use in the most innovative and impactful ways they can imagine.”

Watchable, Interactive, and Global

The 2026 Season is designed to be dynamic and engaging for both in-person and online audiences. Judges and competitors will be mic’d up, performances will be displayed on large screens, and the events will include live commentary, interviews, and real-time scoring. Every event will also be live-streamed and available for replay, making the competition accessible to coffee enthusiasts worldwide.

A Platform for Innovation and Leadership

Staying true to its mission, The Barista League continues to highlight creativity, inclusivity, and leadership within the global coffee community. With minimal barriers to entry, the competition focuses on imagination and collaboration rather than expensive tools or technical setups.

“We are looking for baristas who want to push the boundaries of service, rethink what a coffee experience can be, and use this stage to shape the future of the industry,” the 2026 rules state.

Moloney added, “Despite enormous changes in the industry, the competition landscape has not developed significantly over the past 10 years. We want to create a platform for the future leaders of our industry to stand up and show us where we are going next.”

2025 uae aeropress championship returns this november with a new theme celebrating “qahwa qulture”

Dubai – Qahwa World

The UAE’s most anticipated and inclusive coffee competition is back – and promises to be better than ever.  The 2025 UAE AeroPress Championship returns for its ninth edition, bringing together competitors, café owners, industry professionals, and coffee lovers from across the Emirates in what is now considered one of the most exciting and dynamic coffee events in the region.

Building on the momentum of last year’s record-breaking success – which saw the UAE host the largest coffee competition in the world by number of competitors – the 2025 edition will celebrate the unique and evolving coffee culture of the Emirates under the theme: “A Celebration of Qahwa Qulture in the Emirates.”

This year’s theme pays tribute to the UAE’s deep-rooted coffee heritage – from traditional Arabic Qahwa brewed in a dallah to the rise of specialty coffee and modern methods like the AeroPress.  The event will highlight how these traditions now coexist and shape one of the most vibrant and innovative coffee cultures in the world.

The event’s host, Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, DMCC, said: “The global coffee industry generates more than USD 200 billion each year, spanning production, trade, culture, and consumption, and supports the livelihoods of approximately 25 million farmers. As a longstanding champion of the sector, I have witnessed first-hand the opportunities it creates for producers and consumers alike. As the industry continues to expand and transform, the UAE AeroPress Championship is not only a celebration of brewing excellence; it is a platform for cultural expression and global connection. Hosting the championship at DMCC’s Almas Tower, with support from the DMCC Coffee Centre, which processed more than 7,400 metric tonnes of coffee in 2024 and has recently expanded its capacity to provide even greater market access for our members, reflects our continued commitment to advancing the sector and strengthens Dubai’s position as a global hub for coffee heritage, trade, and innovation.”

The organizer of the event and CEO of Mokha 1450, Garfield Kerr, said: “Dubai and the UAE writ large has become one of the leading specialty coffee markets and coffee destinations in the world, and I do not think this happened by chance. The long history of coffee in the UAE means that coffee is not just a daily dose of caffeine to get you through the day, but a cultural cornerstone that elevates and adds a sense of measure to a normal day.  Furthermore, coffee is used to imbue importance and ceremony to significant events and social gatherings.  Each household has a special recipe for “Qahwa” or “coffee”, that is closely guarded, passed down for generations, and is still referenced for the daily preparation of coffee. For this reason, there is always a very strong level of enthusiasm, passion, as well as innovation at the UAE AeroPress Championship. Accordingly, this year’s iteration, will place the cultural significance of Qahwa in the UAE on full display.”

For 2025, the Championship will again feature two Regional Championships followed by the National Championship, all hosted at the DMCC Almas Conference Centre, Almas Tower, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Dubai.

DXB LIVE Announces Fifth Edition of World of Coffee Dubai 2026

Dubai – Qahwa World

DXB LIVE, the integrated event management and experiential agency of Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), has announced the return of World of Coffee Dubai for its fifth edition, taking place from 18 to 20 January 2026 at Za’abeel Halls 1, 4, 5, and 6 at the DWTC.

Organised by DXB LIVE in collaboration with the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), World of Coffee Dubai has rapidly grown to become the leading coffee industry event in the Middle East, bringing together producers, roasters, traders, and experts from across the globe. The 2026 edition builds on this success, reinforcing Dubai’s reputation as a global hub for coffee trade, culture, and innovation.

Since its inception, the exhibition has quadrupled in size, reflecting the region’s expanding coffee landscape. International exhibitors now account for around 77% of total participants, underscoring the global coffee community’s confidence in Dubai as a meeting point for business and innovation.

The event coincides with the strong growth of the UAE’s coffee market, currently valued at over USD 3.2 billion (AED 12 billion) and projected to grow 8.4% annually, reaching USD 4.5 billion (AED 16.5 billion) by 2029. Across the MENA region, the market is expected to exceed USD 11 billion (AED 40 billion) within the same period. This expansion is fueled by rising demand for specialty coffee, shifting consumer preferences, and sustained investment in quality, sustainability, and technology—all of which are reflected in this year’s enhanced edition.

Commenting on the announcement, Khalid Al Hammadi, Executive Vice President of DXB LIVE, said: “This exhibition embodies the UAE’s vision to be a global hub for specialty coffee, bridging producing regions and fast-growing markets. With participation expanding each year, World of Coffee Dubai has become an international platform uniting leading experts, brands, and innovators—reflecting Dubai’s spirit of innovation and reaffirming its pivotal role in shaping the future of the coffee industry both regionally and globally.”

Yannis Apostolopoulos, CEO of the Specialty Coffee Association, added: “World of Coffee Dubai has become one of the key events where the global coffee community comes together under one roof. Each new edition strengthens its position as an exceptional international showcase, thanks to the outstanding calibre of participants who help define the future of specialty coffee.”

Khalid Al Mulla, CEO of the SCA UAE Chapter, emphasized the event’s educational impact: “What distinguishes World of Coffee Dubai is its commitment to learning and knowledge exchange. It’s more than a marketplace—it’s a place where ideas are shared, skills are refined, and partnerships are built, creating a sustainable and thriving ecosystem for the coffee industry.”

The 2026 edition will feature the most diverse and inclusive program to date, including three national coffee championships—the UAE National Barista Championship, UAE National Cup Tasters Championship, and UAE National Roasting Championship—alongside the Best Coffee Design Awards, the Best New Product Competition, and two exclusive coffee auctions featuring some of the world’s rarest beans.

World of Coffee Dubai continues to serve as a global platform celebrating coffee culture, fostering innovation, and connecting tradition with progress. Exhibitors can now secure their spaces, and early-bird tickets for visitors are available through the official website: dubai.worldofcoffee.org

Rains in Brazil and Tariff Hopes Shake Global Coffee Markets

Dubai – Qahwa World

The global coffee market experienced another week of turbulence as changing weather conditions in Brazil and renewed hopes for a U.S.–Brazil trade deal sent Arabica prices on a volatile ride. December Arabica futures opened the week of October 13 at 373.20 cents per pound, marking the weekly low, climbed to 418.50 cents on Wednesday, and closed Friday at 397.45 cents per pound. The 45.30-cent range reflected a market increasingly driven by both climate and political signals.

The week began with upward momentum, supported by a stronger Brazilian Real and dry weather forecasts across southeastern Brazil. However, optimism faded midweek as rainfall finally reached the coffee-growing regions. Brazil’s Somar Meteorologia reported significant precipitation in Minas Gerais, the country’s largest Arabica-producing state, with further showers expected through the week. The long-awaited rains prompted traders to liquidate long positions, easing the price rally that had dominated previous sessions.

Market sentiment shifted further when U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to discuss trade cooperation. The news sparked speculation that the two countries might resolve the ongoing tariff dispute affecting coffee exports. Brazilian coffee currently faces a 50% import tariff in the U.S., and even the prospect of relief was enough to trigger additional selling pressure. Analysts cautioned that, while both governments have expressed willingness to negotiate, no official policy change has yet been confirmed, leaving American buyers facing the same challenges in securing Brazilian coffee.

In Brazil, farmers welcomed the long-awaited rainfall after weeks of drought, though experts noted that one week of showers will not immediately reverse months of stress endured by coffee trees. The timing and consistency of upcoming rainfall will be critical to support flowering and the next harvest cycle. While weather conditions dominated origin discussions, another noteworthy development came from West Africa. Liberia announced plans to introduce Coffee Liberica as its national flagship crop under the FAO’s One Country One Priority Product initiative, expected to launch in December 2025. The program aims to elevate the indigenous Liberica species to global recognition alongside Arabica and Robusta, potentially revitalizing Liberia’s agribusiness sector by creating jobs, attracting investment, and expanding its international presence. Although Liberica remains unfamiliar to many consumers, industry observers believe this move could generate renewed curiosity and demand for the rare variety.

In currency markets, the U.S. Dollar Index traded within a narrow range as traders monitored political developments and awaited signals from the Federal Reserve, which entered its communication blackout period ahead of its next policy meeting. Concerns about a potential government shutdown in the United States persisted but lacked the urgency seen earlier in the month. Both the British Pound and the Euro strengthened modestly against the Dollar as global markets remained steady. By the end of the week, GBP/USD stood at 1.34 and EUR/USD at 1.165, marking a calm close to an otherwise eventful week in the coffee and currency markets.

Specialty Coffee Association Releases Its 2024 Annual Report

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) has released its 2024 Annual Report, signed by Chief Executive Officer Yannis Apostolopoulos, highlighting a transformative year marked by new quality standards, record membership growth, scientific advancements, and unprecedented global expansion in education and events — all with a strong focus on sustainability, research, and equitable value distribution across the coffee industry.

According to the report, 2024 represented a pivotal year for the SCA, as it officially adopted and published the new Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) standards, replacing the long-standing 2004 cupping form. This milestone positioned the CVA as the official protocol for global coffee quality evaluation. The association recorded more than 10,000 downloads of the CVA forms, over 1,500 learners enrolled in the “CVA for Cuppers” course, and more than 130,000 views on its CVA educational video series on YouTube. Additionally, the SCA waived course fees for over 500 coffee professionals in producing countries, ensuring broader and fairer access to professional education.

A major achievement highlighted in the report was the introduction of a new membership model offering free access to the SCA’s resources, educational programs, and events. This initiative led to exponential growth, bringing the association’s global community to over 100,000 companies and coffee professionals within just six months — a reflection of its ongoing mission to make knowledge and opportunities accessible to all who contribute to the specialty coffee industry.

The report also emphasized the strong research momentum driven by the Coffee Science Foundation (CSF), which supported six flagship projects in 2024. These included studies on physical defects in green coffee, developing a universal roast measurement system, exploring sweetness perception, analyzing the impact of packaging on consumer experience, and understanding how value is created and distributed throughout the coffee value chain. These efforts underscore the SCA’s commitment to fostering data-driven innovation and sustainability.

Globally, the SCA expanded its footprint through multiple major events. The “World of Coffee” trade shows took place in Dubai, Chicago, Busan, and Copenhagen, serving as platforms for knowledge exchange, business, and innovation. Notably, 2024 marked the first-ever World of Coffee held in Asia — in Busan, South Korea. The year also saw the launch of the Coffee Value Summit in Shenzhen, China, focusing on value creation and the implementation of the CVA. Other initiatives included “Green Coffee Connect,” fostering relationships between producers and importers, and the “Retail Buyer’s Lounge,” designed to enhance business networking during trade shows.

Following a period of financial stabilization from 2020 to 2023, the SCA strategically reinvested in 2024 to expand access to education, fund critical research, and strengthen partnerships. The association maintained a balance between program growth and fiscal responsibility, ensuring its ability to continue serving the global coffee community despite economic uncertainty.

In the area of education, the SCA organized five Educator Summits across Asia and the United States, providing platforms for trainers and educators to enhance their teaching and professional development. Comprehensive multilingual surveys were also conducted to gather feedback from trainers and learners, leading to further curriculum improvements and the development of new systems to support global education in coffee.

Looking ahead, the report outlined ambitious plans for 2025, including the launch of a comprehensive coffee evaluation program in partnership with the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), expanded educational offerings for green coffee sellers and retailers, the creation of online forums to connect the global coffee community, and continued research into equitable value distribution and sustainability across the coffee value chain.

The 2024 Annual Report reaffirms the SCA’s role as a leading global organization uniting research, education, standards, and events to build a more sustainable, inclusive, and equitable future for the specialty coffee industry worldwide.

Roast Magazine Reveals 2026 Roaster of the Year Winners

Dubai – Qahwa World

Two outstanding coffee companies have earned top recognition in the 22nd annual Roaster of the Year awards presented by Roast Magazine. Kafiex Roasters and Driftaway Coffee were named the 2026 winners in the Micro and Macro categories, respectively. Their achievements will be highlighted in the November–December 2025 issue of the magazine.

Each year, Roast Magazine selects two roasters that set benchmarks for excellence in coffee quality, environmental responsibility, education, and community engagement. The Micro Roaster of the Year category honors companies producing under 100,000 pounds annually, while the Macro category recognizes those exceeding that volume.

Kafiex Roasters: 2026 Micro Roaster of the Year

Hailing from Vancouver, Washington, Kafiex Roasters operates as both a roaster and café business. Established in 2018 by Matthew and Seidy Selivanow, the company is widely recognized for its focus on sustainability and education. Kafiex runs two coffee shops and has introduced a range of environmentally friendly initiatives, including a zero-waste specialty instant coffee line and a roasting system designed to minimize emissions.

Beyond roasting over 16,000 pounds of coffee in the past year, the team invests heavily in bilingual training programs, direct relationships with producers, and inclusive education efforts that reflect its commitment to accessibility and community empowerment.

Driftaway Coffee: 2026 Macro Roaster of the Year

Founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 2014 by Anu Menon and Suyog Mody, Driftaway Coffee has become known for its personalized approach to coffee education and sustainability. The immigrant- and woman-led business specializes in subscription-based coffee experiences that connect consumers directly with farmers through virtual tastings and transparent sourcing.

Driftaway’s sustainability efforts include compostable packaging, full pricing transparency, and consistent support for women- and minority-owned farms. The company also donates a portion of its proceeds to World Coffee Research. Over the past year, Driftaway roasted more than 125,000 pounds of coffee, continuing its mission to combine environmental responsibility with consumer education.

Honoring Innovation and Impact

The finalists in this year’s competition reflect the evolving spirit of specialty coffee. Alongside Kafiex in the Micro category were Three Keys Coffee and Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters, while Corvus Coffee and Nossa Familia Coffee joined Driftaway as Macro finalists.

All of the contenders demonstrated exceptional leadership in sustainability, equity, and community building — values that continue to define the future of coffee roasting worldwide.

AI and Sustainability Redefine the Future of Coffee Trade

Dubai – Qahwa World

The “Future of Trade 2024: Decoupled and Reconfigured” report released by the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) offers a forward-looking view of how global trade is transforming amid economic, environmental, and technological change.
Although coffee trade is not discussed in detail, the report’s three defining forces — regionalisation, digitalisation, and sustainability — have direct implications for the global coffee industry and its complex supply chain stretching from farms to roasters.

Regionalisation and the Reconfiguration of Supply Chains

The report forecasts that global trade will rebound moderately, growing by 2.6% in 2024 and 3.3% in 2025, after contracting by 1.2% in 2023.
This recovery, however, comes with an important shift: the world is moving toward regionalised trade blocs and “friend-shoring,” in which supply chains are relocated closer to politically aligned or geographically proximate partners.

In the coffee sector, this means supply routes and logistics networks are being redrawn. Neutral hubs such as Dubai are expected to gain importance as aggregation and re-export centres for coffee shipments heading to Europe, Asia, and Africa.
With the total value of global merchandise trade reaching US$31 trillion in 2023, competition among trading hubs to attract high-value commodities, including coffee, is intensifying.

Sustainability: From Compliance to Market Advantage

The DMCC report highlights the rapid rise of climate policy as a trade determinant, particularly with the introduction of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
This system is redefining competitiveness by penalising carbon-intensive exports and rewarding those with low emissions and traceable supply chains.

While services trade is growing by 9% compared to 6% for goods, agricultural producers — especially in coffee — face mounting pressure to meet environmental standards and prove compliance with deforestation-free regulations.
Those who succeed can access the so-called “green premium”, where verified sustainable coffees command higher prices in European markets.

Within this context, Dubai’s advanced infrastructure and regulatory environment position it as a gateway for sustainability-compliant trade.
According to DMCC’s Commodity Trade Index 2024, the United States ranks first, followed by the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland, confirming Dubai’s role as one of the world’s top three commodity trading hubs — a ranking that reinforces its potential as a major coffee re-export platform.

Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence: The New Engine of Coffee Trade

The report identifies artificial intelligence (AI) as the single most transformative force in global commerce.
In the coffee industry, AI can optimise pricing, logistics, and quality control — analysing weather data, yield forecasts, and logistics variables to improve risk management and profitability.

AI-driven blockchain traceability systems are also reshaping trust across the supply chain, giving roasters and buyers greater visibility from origin to cup.
At the same time, trade documentation and payments are moving toward full automation, making transactions faster and less costly.

The report further projects that B2B e-commerce will grow by 14.5% through 2026, while digital services exports reached US$3.82 trillion with annual growth of 8%.
For coffee producers and roasters, this trend opens the door to direct online trade platforms that bypass intermediaries and enhance market access for certified coffees.

Trade Finance and the Credit Gap

DMCC underscores a global trade finance gap of US$2.5 trillion, a shortfall that disproportionately affects small exporters and agricultural producers.
In coffee-producing regions, this financing gap often limits the ability of cooperatives and smallholders to meet environmental or certification requirements.

Innovative financial instruments such as Supply Chain Finance (SCF) can bridge this divide by linking credit access to verified sustainability and traceability metrics — offering incentives for producers who adopt transparent and climate-friendly practices.
