The World’s Mood, Tuned to an Emirati Rhythm

By: Ali Al Amodi

In a world where a cup of coffee sets the rhythm of daily life, World of Coffee Dubai 2026 proved to be far more than a specialized industry event. It stood as a reflection of a city that knows how to turn the impossible into reality. From the heart of Dubai, the world’s largest global platform for coffee trade took shape—an irony that perfectly captures the meaning of vision and the ability to transform geography into opportunity.

Hosted at the Dubai World Trade Centre, the exhibition presented a striking scene: pavilions from 78 countries, more than 2,100 companies and brands, and an area exceeding 20,000 square meters. Together, they told the story of coffee’s journey from distant mountain farms to the consumer’s cup at the far edges of the world. This was not merely a commercial showcase, but a vibrant network of relationships, knowledge exchange, and advanced technologies in roasting, processing, and brewing.

The visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, carried special significance. It underscored that attention to this sector is part of a broader vision that sees the creative economy and global value chains as key drivers of development. Coffee—often described as “setting the world’s mood”—has also become an indicator of market vitality and growth opportunities, at a time when the global coffee market is moving toward hundreds of billions of dollars. Record-breaking prices at premium coffee auctions clearly signal rising global demand for high-quality coffee.

World of Coffee Dubai encapsulates a powerful Emirati lesson: success is not measured by natural resources, but by vision, connectivity, and the courage to invest in the future. In the coffee cup that begins the day for millions lies the story of a city that chose to become a meeting point for the world—and succeeded.

By hosting this global event, Dubai once again confirms that it does not wait to be invited into the future; it takes the initiative to shape it. From a coffee exhibition to a global economic platform, a clear Emirati philosophy emerges: transforming everyday details into major opportunities and building a global reputation based on quality, organization, and innovation. Thus, the morning cup of coffee becomes yet another witness to the story of a city that truly masters the art of inspiration.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of World of Coffee Dubai is the human and cultural diversity flowing through its halls. Here, a farmer from Latin America meets a roaster from Asia, while an African trader sits beside a European investor—united by a single shared language: coffee.

It is a convergence created by a city that believes its true role is to be a bridge, not a barrier, and an open marketplace for ideas as much as for trade.

The Best New Product Award was presented to Sage for The Oracle Dual Boiler, recognising innovation in coffee equipment and brewing technology. The Coffee Design Award was awarded to Coffee Market Innovations (CMI), celebrating excellence in stand design, creativity, and brand presentation on the exhibition floor.

Key commercial results were confirmed through the Dubai Coffee Auction programme, with the Dubai Coffee Equipment Auction on Day One and the Exhibitors’ Coffee Auction on Day Three, organised by DXB LIVE with DMCC, delivering major milestones including a Bolivian coffee reaching USD 386 per kilogram (the origin’s second highest price on record), the first ever continental U.S. coffee offered at auction setting a new price benchmark, and a record diversity of 13 origins represented in a single auction, reinforcing World of Coffee Dubai’s role as a transparent, trade driven marketplace for global buyers and producers.

Commenting on the fifth edition, Khalid Al Hammadi, Executive Vice President of DXB LIVE, said: “World of Coffee Dubai has firmly established itself as a platform where the specialty coffee industry comes together to celebrate excellence, exchange knowledge, and conduct meaningful business. The remarkable growth in visitor numbers, along with the strong early demand for exhibition space for the 2027 edition, reflects the role of both Dubai and the event as a hub connecting markets, talent, and opportunities.”

Over the course of three days, World of Coffee Dubai 2026 brought together more than 2,100 exhibiting companies and brands from 78 countries, serving as a key meeting point for producers, roasters, manufacturers, buyers, and decision-makers across all stages of the specialty coffee value chain. The final day shifted the focus from engagement to recognition, with a formal celebration of professional excellence, innovation, and achievements within the sector.

As World of Coffee Dubai 2026 concludes, the fifth edition stands as its largest and most internationally diverse to date, underscoring Dubai’s growing influence as a global hub for specialty coffee trade, professional excellence, and innovation.

Dubai Leads the Future Dialogue of the Global Coffee Sector

Dubai – Qahwa World

In a move that reinforces Dubai’s position as a global center of gravity in the coffee economy, the city is preparing to host World of Coffee Dubai 2026, an event that seeks to outline a new chapter in the history of the industry, shifting coffee from a traditional commodity trade to a knowledge- and innovation-driven sector.

  • A Journey of Quality Through Time

The exhibition’s vision is grounded in the historical progression that shaped today’s coffee culture, while correcting misconceptions and offering authoritative reference content:

The Era of Mass Production (1890–1960):
This period was dominated by “coffee for the masses,” with the focus placed on volume and ease of preparation at the expense of quality.

The Emergence of Specialization (1960–1990):
The early signs of a shift toward higher quality appeared in the 1960s, a movement that led to the official emergence of the term “specialty coffee” in the 1970s. This era marked a growing global focus on origin, quality, and roasting methods.

The Age of Craft and Sustainability (2000–Present):
Today, the industry has entered a professional and mature phase, where coffee has become a social experience supported by technology, alongside an intensified focus on transparency and sustainability.

  • Figures and Ambitions

The fifth edition of the exhibition will take place from 18 to 20 January 2026 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. What began with just 3,000 visitors has grown into an event attracting more than 17,000 visitors and 450 international exhibitors, positioning it as the primary gateway to the regional coffee market, which is projected to reach revenues of USD 38 billion by 2030.

  • Participation Opportunities and Activities

The exhibition offers a range of opportunities for professionals, including:

Roasters Village: A dedicated area for small roasteries to showcase their products directly (AED 9,000).

Brewing Zone and Cupping Rooms: Professional platforms that enable the tasting and evaluation of rare coffees by industry experts.

Innovation Awards and Coffee Auctions: Activities that celebrate creativity and bring exporters and buyers together in a dynamic setting.

“Be a Speaker” Program: A knowledge-sharing platform that allows experts to present their insights on the future of the industry and the impact of technology and artificial intelligence.

An Invitation to Regional Cafés

The exhibition invites cafés across the region to join the World of Coffee Café Network, benefiting from direct sourcing opportunities and professional networking with more than 1,980 brands from 130 countries.

World of Coffee Dubai 2026 is not merely a trade event; it is a global platform that brings farmers together with roasters, investors with baristas, collectively shaping the future of the global coffee landscape from the heart of Dubai.

WCR CEO Reviews 2025 Achievements in Coffee Innovation

An annual update from CEO Vern Long highlights scientific progress, global partnerships, and climate resilience

Dubai – Qahwa World

World Coffee Research (WCR) has described 2025 as a defining year for the organization and the wider coffee industry, citing accelerated innovation, strengthened global partnerships, and tangible progress in developing climate-resilient coffee varieties.

In his annual review, WCR Chief Executive Officer Vern Long emphasized that the organization’s achievements this year were driven by sustained investment from more than 200 member companies across 30 countries, alongside close collaboration with national coffee institutes worldwide. These partnerships enabled WCR to move improved coffee varieties from research into farmers’ fields at an unprecedented pace.

According to WCR, the focus on variety development is critical as coffee-producing regions face increasing pressure from climate change, disease, and production volatility. The organization positions its work as essential to safeguarding the long-term stability and diversity of global coffee supplies.

Key achievements in 2025

  • Improving access to proven varieties
In Peru, WCR installed 10 new arabica seed lots of the varieties IPR 107 and Paraneima in partnership with eight local organizations. These varieties were previously identified as top performers under local conditions through WCR’s International Multilocation Variety Trial, which has been running since 2015.
In Uganda, WCR supported the installation of 15 mother gardens and nurseries of disease-resilient robusta varieties in cooperation with the national coffee institute NaCORI, expanding farmers’ access to improved planting material.

  • Advancing global arabica breeding efforts
WCR began arabica field trials and recorded the first harvests under the Innovea Global Coffee Breeding Network. The initiative, recognized as one of TIME magazine’s Best Inventions of 2025, is described as the most ambitious and globally coordinated coffee breeding program to date, aimed at delivering high-performing, high-quality varieties for future generations.

  • Launching robusta breeding under Innovea
A robusta breeding program was added to the Innovea network, with Vietnam and Ghana joining as national collaborators. This expansion brings total participation to 11 countries, collectively accounting for around 40% of global coffee production. The robusta program is designed to run in parallel with arabica efforts, focusing on resilience while supporting origin diversity.

  • Strengthening scientific collaboration worldwide
WCR reported unprecedented levels of collaboration among scientists, governments, and coffee companies. One study published in 2025 brought together researchers from 15 countries across 23 trial sites to examine how 29 arabica varieties respond to leaf rust under different growing conditions. The findings are intended to support the development of more resilient coffee trees.

Looking ahead

Despite ongoing challenges facing the coffee industry, WCR underscored that innovation and collaboration remain powerful tools for risk mitigation and long-term sustainability. As the organization enters the new year, it expressed gratitude to its global community of members and partners for their continued commitment to securing the future of coffee.

East Asia’s Coffee Shop Landscape Surges as China Alone Adds 20,000 Stores in One Year

Dubai – Qahwa World

A new edition of Project Café East Asia 2026 by World Coffee Portal reveals an exceptional year for the branded coffee chain sector across East Asia, with the region’s total number of outlets jumping 18.4% to reach 180,268 stores. The strongest momentum came from China, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, all of which posted double-digit expansion in store counts.

  • China Leads the Region with Record-Breaking Growth

China registered the fastest acceleration, expanding its branded coffee shop network by 31.5% over the past year to reach 87,505 outlets—nearly half of all branded cafés in East Asia and almost double the size of the U.S. market. It also became the first national market ever to add more than 20,000 net new stores within a single calendar year.

The main force behind this surge came from domestic champions Luckin Coffee and Cotti Coffee, which together contributed over 12,000 new locations, representing half of the country’s entire branded segment.

China’s competitive landscape is being shaped heavily by pricing battles, most notably the RMB 9.9 (US$1.40) rivalry between Luckin and Cotti. This emphasis on affordability has also propelled the rise of budget-forward chains such as Lucky Cup, operated by Mixue, and KCOFFEE under Yum China.

As local operators increasingly dominate, several international brands have been pushed to reconsider their strategies. A striking example is Starbucks’ agreement to sell a majority stake in its 8,000-store Chinese business to Hong Kong–based Boyu Capital in a deal valued at $4 billion.

  • China Emerges as a Global Lab for Beverage Innovation

While 80% of surveyed Chinese consumers drink hot coffee at least once a week and a quarter consume it daily, operators are aggressively expanding their cold, flavored, and fruit-infused offerings—turning China into a leading testing ground for new flavors.

Matcha, palm sugar, and coconut were rated among the most appealing additions by consumers. Luckin Coffee’s Coconut Latte, introduced in 2017, continues to dominate its sales charts. The brand is known for launching experimental drinks weekly, resulting in items like jelly lattes and cheese lattes.

KCOFFEE has taken novelty even further, releasing products such as Egg Tart Dirty Coffee, a fried-chicken-inspired latte, and even a sparkling black vinegar Americano.

  • Homegrown Chains Strengthen Positions Across East Asia

East Asia’s coffee chain ecosystem is increasingly being shaped by domestic players that emphasize local traditions, accessible pricing, and menus tailored to national tastes. According to World Coffee Portal’s consumer survey, 57% of Chinese respondents prefer homegrown chains over international brands—a trend replicated across the region.

Key examples include:

Jinji Jawa in Indonesia,

ZUS Coffee in Malaysia,

Pickup Coffee in the Philippines, and

Milano Coffee in Vietnam—

each of which added hundreds of new stores in the last year. Their rapid expansion outpaced Western competitors like Starbucks, Costa Coffee, and Dunkin’.

Thailand showed similar dynamics: Café Amazon and PunThai Coffee accounted for 80% of all new cafés opened in the country this year, highlighting the region’s increasing focus on localization, digital engagement, and culturally relevant branding.

  • Industry Leaders Expect Continued Growth

The majority of operators surveyed remain optimistic about the sector’s direction:

71% reported higher sales over the past year.

68% expect trading conditions to further improve in the next 12 months.

World Coffee Portal forecasts that East Asia will become the first region to surpass 200,000 branded coffee shops by the end of 2026. By November 2030, the regional market is projected to exceed 263,000 outlets, reflecting a five-year compound annual growth rate of 7.9%.

  • China is expected to maintain strong momentum with:

20% outlet growth in 2026, and

10.3% average annual growth over the following five years,
bringing its store count to over 142,500 outlets by 2030.

Other markets—including Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam—are also predicted to achieve double-digit outlet expansion over the next year.

  • Expert Insight

Commenting on the findings, Jeffrey Young, Founder and CEO of Allegra Group, highlighted East Asia’s rising global influence. He described China’s addition of more than 20,000 stores in a single year as “astonishing” and emphasized that the region is poised to drive the majority of global coffee market growth in the coming decades. Young added that the entry of East Asian chains into Western markets—along with their distinctive approaches to technology and product innovation—could reshape international trends.

The Barista League Unveils Game-Changing 2026 Season

DUBAI – Qahwa World

The Barista League, the organization known for its innovative approach to coffee culture, has announced its game-changing 2026 Season, introducing a radically new competition concept that fundamentally redefines what a coffee competition can be by shifting its focus to Concept and Service.

Moving away from mere technical perfection, the 2026 season challenges baristas to step into the role of experience creators, communicators, and deliverers. The new format is built around three core pillars: Concept, Service, and Product.

“Baristas are the gatekeepers to the coffee experience. Their job is not to grow, source, roast coffee but to translate the work, competence, skill, meaning, culture and stories of the coffee industry to consumers. Through the service and preparation of drinks the barista is responsible for the actual delivery of that experience to consumers every day all around the world.” – From The Barista League 2026 Rules.

The New Scoring Structure

In a dramatic departure from traditional competitions, the new format gives Concept and Service equal weighting, together constituting 62% of the total score, while the physical Product accounts for the remaining 38%.

This paradigm shift emphasizes that the overall experiential concept—including design, storytelling, communication, and service style—is now more critical than the drink itself. Competitors are tasked with developing a complete sensory journey, rethinking the coffee experience and using The Barista League’s stage, sound, and lighting to bring their bold ideas to life.

“We want to see bold, creative service concepts that push the boundaries of what a coffee experience can be,” said Steven Moloney, founder of The Barista League. “This stage is a platform for baristas to use in the most innovative and impactful ways they can imagine.”

Watchable, Interactive, and Global

The 2026 competition has been engineered for maximum audience engagement, both live and online.

  • To enhance transparency and excitement, both teams and judges will be mic’d up.

  • Performances, live commentary, interviews, and scoring will be streamed on big screens for the in-person audience.

  • Every event will be live-streamed and archived online, making the innovation accessible to coffee fans globally.

A Platform for Future Leadership

True to its mission, The Barista League continues to serve as an accessible platform for innovation and leadership. The competition is designed with a low barrier to entry, ensuring that skill, imagination, and collaboration take centre stage over expensive equipment or elaborate setups.

“We are looking for baristas who want to push the boundaries of service, rethink what a coffee experience can be, and use this stage to shape the future of the industry.” – From The Barista League 2026 Rules.

Moloney added, “Despite enormous changes in the industry, the competition landscape has not developed significantly over the past 10 years. We want to create a platform for the future leaders of our industry to stand up and show us where we are going next.”

2026 Global Season Schedule

The 2026 season will feature six events across six continents, each hosting six hand-selected barista teams:

Event Date Location
Europe March 28, 2026 Prague
Latin America May 8, 2026 Mexico City
Asia June 11, 2026 Tokyo
North America September 3, 2026 Atlanta
Africa October 3, 2026 Johannesburg
Pacific November 13, 2026 Brisbane

The Barista League 2026 season is made possible by the continued support of partners Rancilio, Oatly, Toddy, Pacific Foods Barista Series, Acme, Acaia, and Barista Magazine.

JDE Peet’s Reports Strategic and Operational Progress, Confirms 2025 Outlook

Amsterdam – Qahwa World

JDE Peet’s N.V. (Euronext: JDEP), the world’s leading pure-play coffee company, announced continued progress in implementing its new brand-led growth strategy and productivity initiatives while reaffirming its 2025 financial outlook.

Strategic and Productivity Initiatives Under Way

On July 1, 2025, JDE Peet’s launched its “Reignite the Amazing” strategy, designed to accelerate brand-led growth and enhance operational efficiency. The company reported solid progress across several fronts:

  • U.S. Integration: The full integration of the U.S. capsules business into Peet’s Coffee was completed following the discontinuation of the L’OR Barista roll-out in the American market.

  • Distribution Transition: Peet’s is transitioning from its Direct Store Delivery (DSD) system to a direct central distribution model in the U.S., expected to be completed by the end of the first half of 2026.

  • Portfolio Optimization: The company exited its low-margin Food Ingredients (B2B) business in Asia.

  • Manufacturing Footprint: Two additional plant closures were announced—one in northeastern Brazil and another in the northeastern United States—as part of an ongoing global optimization program.

  • Brand Rationalization: Fifteen long-tail brands are scheduled for transition within the next six months.

  • Cultural Transformation: JDE Peet’s is reshaping its corporate culture around four newly defined values—Dare to amaze, Own it, Make it simple, and Win together—to foster agility, ownership, and transparency across the organization.

Business Performance Update

The company stated that its overall third-quarter performance was broadly in line with expectations, taking into account anticipated retailer negotiations and customer pre-buying during the first half of the year.

JDE Peet’s reaffirmed its 2025 outlook, citing strong discipline in pricing and cost control that continues to support gross profit and adjusted EBIT. Approximately 96 percent of the second wave of global price negotiations, which began in July, have already been completed.

While green-coffee prices remain significantly elevated and increasingly volatile compared to previous years, JDE Peet’s said it continues to manage these pressures effectively. The company also confirmed the termination of its share-buyback program as of September 1.

Update on Keurig Dr Pepper Transaction

The planned public offer by Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. (KDP) for all issued and outstanding shares of JDE Peet’s is progressing as scheduled:

  • The regulatory antitrust filing has been submitted in the U.S.

  • The company has received positive advice from JDE Peet’s Dutch Works Council.

  • The transaction closing remains expected in the first half of 2026, subject to the satisfaction or waiver of customary pre-offer and closing conditions.

About JDE Peet’s

JDE Peet’s is the world’s largest pure-play coffee company, serving approximately 4,400 cups of coffee per second across more than 100 markets. Guided by its Reignite the Amazing strategy, the company is pursuing brand-led growth through three global power brands—Peet’s, L’OR, and Jacobs—alongside a portfolio of nine local icons.

In 2024, JDE Peet’s generated €8.8 billion in sales and employed more than 21,000 people worldwide.

Anatoly Gorbunov Reveals to Qahwa World the Story Behind the World’s Most Expensive Cup of Coffee

Dubai – Ali Alzakary

In September, Dubai witnessed an event that captured the attention of the global coffee community. The café chain Roasters Specialty Coffee House entered the Guinness World Records for setting a new global milestone — the world’s most expensive cup of coffee, priced at USD 680.

Behind this achievement lies not just an expensive beverage but a story of passion, persistence, and a pursuit of perfection. In an exclusive interview with Qahwa World, Anatoly Gorbunov, the General Beverage Director of the group, shared how this record was born.

From an Idea to a Dream

“It all began with our dream to obtain Esmeralda coffee from Panama,” recalls Anatoly. “This variety is considered one of the rarest and most expensive in the world. For several years, we tried to win it at auction, but each time the beans went to other buyers.

In January, our founder and CEO, Konstantin Harbuz, told me, ‘I want us to get this coffee, no matter what it takes. Use all your contacts.’

Anatoly adds, “It took less than a week of calls and searching before I found someone who had a small amount of it. After long negotiations, we bought three kilograms of this rare coffee, despite its high price—we wanted it badly, and we got it.”

A Special Presentation for a Special Coffee

“We introduced this coffee to the menu at one of our central branches on the Boulevard and planned every detail: handcrafted double-glass cups, a special dessert designed to match the coffee’s flavor profile.

Guests cannot order Esmeralda immediately — it must be reserved at least a day in advance. We invite our head roaster, and the preparation takes place right in front of the guest, as an individual, personalized service. Everything is accompanied by a story about the coffee’s origin, its rarity, and what makes it exclusive. It’s a true coffee performance.”

The Road to the Guinness Record

“In April, we started selling Esmeralda. At the end of the month, during one of our meetings, the idea came up: why not make all of Dubai hear about it? That’s when we decided to aim for a Guinness record,” says Gorbunov.

The team contacted the Guinness World Records organization. After verification, it turned out that the existing world record belonged to a coffee priced at only USD 140.
“We realized we had a real chance,” he explains.

To register the record, it was necessary to prove the price and justify it. “You can’t just make a cup of coffee and say it costs a million. We provided all the required proof — purchase receipts, auction results, reports from the point-of-sale system confirming real sales, and statements from independent witnesses.”

A Coincidence That Became Destiny

The record attempt was scheduled for August. It coincided with an important event — the annual Panamanian auction.
“I suggested we wait for the results. And indeed, the Esmeralda farm won in three categories and set a new record — about USD 30,000 per pound. It was perfect confirmation of the coffee’s value. We set the date — September 13.

That day, an official inspector arrived at our café. Everything took place under the supervision of two independent witnesses. Each detail was checked, every receipt confirmed. After the process, the inspector handed us the world record certificate. It was a historic moment for the entire team.”

Dubai on the Coffee Map of the World

“Following the event, we were honored to receive congratulations from Mr. Khalid Al Mulla., Chairman of the Specialty Coffee Association of the UAE,” Anatoly recalls. “He congratulated us and said this achievement was not only for our brand but for all of Dubai. The city officially entered the history of the global coffee industry.”

After that, dozens of media outlets wrote about Roasters Specialty Coffee House, and interest in Esmeralda increased dramatically.
“We were officially allowed to use the Guinness logo for six months — a rare right, since it’s a registered trademark. We placed it on our packaging, displayed certificates in all our branches. The result was enormous: brand awareness grew, guest traffic increased, and Esmeralda sales rose. People came specifically to try ‘the coffee from the Guinness Book.’”

Impact on the Team and the Industry

“For us, it wasn’t just a marketing success,” notes Gorbunov. “It changed the atmosphere inside the company. People felt proud and motivated. We started receiving many applications from those who wanted to train with us. We have a strong training program and our own academy, where baristas receive professional education.

We also organize internal competitions to discover new talents. It motivates the team and strengthens our collective spirit.”

The Pursuit of Perfection Continues

“We are not stopping with Esmeralda. Our menu already includes exclusive varieties — Colombia Wush Wush and Tutti Frutti. We are negotiating with a Japanese company that owns farms in Costa Rica, one of which has received the Cup of Excellence title.

We regularly buy coffee from Yemen and keep track of Jamaica Blue Mountain, one of the rarest coffees in the world — about 95 percent of Jamaica’s harvest goes to Japan. Our goal is to always have this coffee available in our cafés.”

“We also plan to participate in future auctions in Panama and Yemen, as well as those to be held in January during the World of Coffee Dubai exhibition,” he adds.

From Dubai to the World

Today, the network has nine operating branches in Dubai, and the tenth will open at Dubai Hills next week. By the end of the year, Roasters plans to open twelve cafés in total.
“We are preparing to expand into Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, and London, and we see Saudi Arabia as a promising franchise market. We want Roasters to become a symbol of quality, innovation, and passion for coffee at the international level,” concludes Anatoly Gorbunov.

Starbucks Unveils AI Barista That Predicts Coffee Orders Before Customers Arrive

Dubai – Qahwa World

Starbucks is integrating artificial intelligence into its daily operations as part of a broader plan to enhance efficiency and customer experience. CEO Brian Niccol confirmed the company’s AI-driven direction during Salesforce’s Dreamforce 2025 event in San Francisco, according to Fortune.

Niccol explained that Starbucks is developing internal technologies designed to help baristas prepare drinks in real time — and potentially predict customers’ orders before they even place them. While the company is still in the learning and experimentation phase, Niccol emphasized that AI is already helping Starbucks pursue its ambition of becoming “the world’s great customer service company again.”

The “Green Dot Assist”

One of the company’s most advanced tools so far is called Green Dot Assist, described as a “barista assistant.” Piloted in June and now rolled out to additional stores, it operates as a chatbot-like system that supports store leaders in day-to-day operations — including guidance on drink preparation, troubleshooting equipment issues, and managing workflow.

A Starbucks spokesperson told TODAY.com that the tool is intended to assist employees rather than replace them, helping make their work smoother and more efficient.

Predictive Coffee Ordering

Niccol also noted that the Starbucks app remains central to the company’s AI strategy. He outlined a future scenario where customers might not even need to open the app — instead, they could simply say, “Hey, I need my Starbucks order. I’ll be there in 10 minutes,” and the AI system would have the drink ready upon arrival.

Despite these advancements, Niccol clarified that Starbucks is “not near” the stage of using a fully robotic workforce. The company, he said, remains committed to a “real craft” experience by having more human partners in stores to serve customers personally rather than relying on automation.

The Broader AI Movement in Coffee

Starbucks is not alone in exploring AI integration. At Hudson Yards in New York City, an AI-powered robotic barista named Jarvis is already preparing drinks for customers — even engaging with them via gestures and conversation before requesting a tip.

As AI technology continues to evolve, coffee chains around the world are experimenting with automation to strike a balance between innovation and preserving the artistry that defines the coffee experience.

DXB LIVE Announces Fifth Edition of World of Coffee Dubai 2026

Dubai – Qahwa World

DXB LIVE, the integrated event management and experiential agency of Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), has announced the return of World of Coffee Dubai for its fifth edition, taking place from 18 to 20 January 2026 at Za’abeel Halls 1, 4, 5, and 6 at the DWTC.

Organised by DXB LIVE in collaboration with the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), World of Coffee Dubai has rapidly grown to become the leading coffee industry event in the Middle East, bringing together producers, roasters, traders, and experts from across the globe. The 2026 edition builds on this success, reinforcing Dubai’s reputation as a global hub for coffee trade, culture, and innovation.

Since its inception, the exhibition has quadrupled in size, reflecting the region’s expanding coffee landscape. International exhibitors now account for around 77% of total participants, underscoring the global coffee community’s confidence in Dubai as a meeting point for business and innovation.

The event coincides with the strong growth of the UAE’s coffee market, currently valued at over USD 3.2 billion (AED 12 billion) and projected to grow 8.4% annually, reaching USD 4.5 billion (AED 16.5 billion) by 2029. Across the MENA region, the market is expected to exceed USD 11 billion (AED 40 billion) within the same period. This expansion is fueled by rising demand for specialty coffee, shifting consumer preferences, and sustained investment in quality, sustainability, and technology—all of which are reflected in this year’s enhanced edition.

Commenting on the announcement, Khalid Al Hammadi, Executive Vice President of DXB LIVE, said: “This exhibition embodies the UAE’s vision to be a global hub for specialty coffee, bridging producing regions and fast-growing markets. With participation expanding each year, World of Coffee Dubai has become an international platform uniting leading experts, brands, and innovators—reflecting Dubai’s spirit of innovation and reaffirming its pivotal role in shaping the future of the coffee industry both regionally and globally.”

Yannis Apostolopoulos, CEO of the Specialty Coffee Association, added: “World of Coffee Dubai has become one of the key events where the global coffee community comes together under one roof. Each new edition strengthens its position as an exceptional international showcase, thanks to the outstanding calibre of participants who help define the future of specialty coffee.”

Khalid Al Mulla, CEO of the SCA UAE Chapter, emphasized the event’s educational impact: “What distinguishes World of Coffee Dubai is its commitment to learning and knowledge exchange. It’s more than a marketplace—it’s a place where ideas are shared, skills are refined, and partnerships are built, creating a sustainable and thriving ecosystem for the coffee industry.”

The 2026 edition will feature the most diverse and inclusive program to date, including three national coffee championships—the UAE National Barista Championship, UAE National Cup Tasters Championship, and UAE National Roasting Championship—alongside the Best Coffee Design Awards, the Best New Product Competition, and two exclusive coffee auctions featuring some of the world’s rarest beans.

World of Coffee Dubai continues to serve as a global platform celebrating coffee culture, fostering innovation, and connecting tradition with progress. Exhibitors can now secure their spaces, and early-bird tickets for visitors are available through the official website: dubai.worldofcoffee.org
