Roatán Coffee Experience Named Among Top 100 in the Americas

Honduras – Qahwa World

A specialty coffee concept in Roatán, Honduras, known as Spirit Origin Coffee, has been included in the 2026 list of the Top 100 Coffee Shops across North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The selection process evaluated thousands of coffee shops using a mix of expert assessment and public participation.

Located on the island of Roatán, the concept goes beyond the traditional café model by focusing on coffee experiences at the place of production. Its signature offering is a curated “coffee omakase” session, where small groups of guests are guided through a multi-step tasting of different coffee preparations, often paired with food, in an intimate setting overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Each session is designed to highlight the origin, processing, and characteristics of Honduran coffee.

A key aspect of the project is its emphasis on serving coffee at the source rather than exporting all value-added stages abroad. The experience features Honduran specialty lots, including coffees that have received recognition in quality competitions such as Cup of Excellence, presented directly in the environment where they are grown and processed.

According to the founder, the initiative reflects a shift in how coffee-producing regions can retain more value locally while offering visitors a deeper connection to the product and its origins. The recognition places Roatán on the broader specialty coffee map alongside established destinations in the region.

Beyond its on-site tasting program, the company also distributes freshly roasted coffee internationally, shipping to customers in numerous countries and expanding access to coffee roasted at origin.

As global interest in immersive travel experiences continues to grow, the project positions itself at the intersection of specialty coffee, hospitality, and origin-based tourism, offering visitors a closer look at the journey from farm to cup.

Step into an evening of aroma, flavour, and craft, centered around connection

Dubai, UAE  – Qahwa World

Mokha 1450, the UAE-based luxury specialty coffee brand, invites guests to discover coffee through a new lens with an immersive, multi-sensory experience on Saturday, 25 April 2026, at its Coffee Lounge in Golden Mile, The Palm Jumeirah. Created as a space for connection as much as discovery, the evening brings people together over coffee, encouraging conversation, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for craft.

Designed as a journey through flavor and aroma, the evening unfolds across curated stations, each exploring a different expression of coffee.  From refined zero-proof cocktails to personalized brewing rituals, the experience blends heritage with innovation, offering a deeper understanding of coffee as both a science and an art form, while creating space to pause, connect, and engage.

At the heart of the evening is The Coffee Olfactory Experience, a guided, interactive session that explores the relationship between aroma and taste.  Led by Specialty Coffee Association (SCA)-certified experts, guests will discover the nuances of single-origin beans, the impact of brewing techniques, and the role of glassware in shaping flavor perception.

Across the space, three distinct coffee experiences will be unveiled:

Smoke & Diamonds presents a refined, zero-proof coffee cocktail layered with delicate smoky notes, served over crystal-clear diamond-shaped ice for a striking sensory experience.

The Desert Flower reimagines traditional Arabic coffee into a chilled, modern composition, infused with saffron, honey, and rose water, and served over an ice sphere encasing the UAE’s national flower, the Tribulus Omanense.

Table-Side Brewing offers a more intimate encounter, with baristas preparing coffee directly at the table, allowing guests to engage with the process and explore how technique shapes flavor.

Guests will also experience a curated music journey inspired by the origins of Mokha 1450’s coffee beans, spanning Jamaica, Ethiopia, Cuba, Colombia, and Yemen, creating an atmosphere that reflects the global story behind each cup.

The Barista League Unveils Game-Changing 2026 Season

DUBAI – Qahwa World

The Barista League, the organization known for its innovative approach to coffee culture, has announced its game-changing 2026 Season, introducing a radically new competition concept that fundamentally redefines what a coffee competition can be by shifting its focus to Concept and Service.

Moving away from mere technical perfection, the 2026 season challenges baristas to step into the role of experience creators, communicators, and deliverers. The new format is built around three core pillars: Concept, Service, and Product.

“Baristas are the gatekeepers to the coffee experience. Their job is not to grow, source, roast coffee but to translate the work, competence, skill, meaning, culture and stories of the coffee industry to consumers. Through the service and preparation of drinks the barista is responsible for the actual delivery of that experience to consumers every day all around the world.” – From The Barista League 2026 Rules.

The New Scoring Structure

In a dramatic departure from traditional competitions, the new format gives Concept and Service equal weighting, together constituting 62% of the total score, while the physical Product accounts for the remaining 38%.

This paradigm shift emphasizes that the overall experiential concept—including design, storytelling, communication, and service style—is now more critical than the drink itself. Competitors are tasked with developing a complete sensory journey, rethinking the coffee experience and using The Barista League’s stage, sound, and lighting to bring their bold ideas to life.

“We want to see bold, creative service concepts that push the boundaries of what a coffee experience can be,” said Steven Moloney, founder of The Barista League. “This stage is a platform for baristas to use in the most innovative and impactful ways they can imagine.”

Watchable, Interactive, and Global

The 2026 competition has been engineered for maximum audience engagement, both live and online.

  • To enhance transparency and excitement, both teams and judges will be mic’d up.

  • Performances, live commentary, interviews, and scoring will be streamed on big screens for the in-person audience.

  • Every event will be live-streamed and archived online, making the innovation accessible to coffee fans globally.

A Platform for Future Leadership

True to its mission, The Barista League continues to serve as an accessible platform for innovation and leadership. The competition is designed with a low barrier to entry, ensuring that skill, imagination, and collaboration take centre stage over expensive equipment or elaborate setups.

“We are looking for baristas who want to push the boundaries of service, rethink what a coffee experience can be, and use this stage to shape the future of the industry.” – From The Barista League 2026 Rules.

Moloney added, “Despite enormous changes in the industry, the competition landscape has not developed significantly over the past 10 years. We want to create a platform for the future leaders of our industry to stand up and show us where we are going next.”

2026 Global Season Schedule

The 2026 season will feature six events across six continents, each hosting six hand-selected barista teams:

Event Date Location
Europe March 28, 2026 Prague
Latin America May 8, 2026 Mexico City
Asia June 11, 2026 Tokyo
North America September 3, 2026 Atlanta
Africa October 3, 2026 Johannesburg
Pacific November 13, 2026 Brisbane

The Barista League 2026 season is made possible by the continued support of partners Rancilio, Oatly, Toddy, Pacific Foods Barista Series, Acme, Acaia, and Barista Magazine.

Coffee Tasting in Colors… An Innovative Experience in Dubai

Dubai Qahwa World

I received an invitation from my friend Kobi Tolentino to attend an unusual coffee tasting session. In his invitation, he referred to it as a “coffee tasting in colors”—something I had never heard of before. Upon arriving at the venue, Scarab Café in Al Qusais, Dubai, it became clear that I was about to experience something entirely new: a modern approach to coffee designed by this young company to introduce people to coffee and make the selection process easier through the use of colors.

The event began with a welcoming speech by Mr. Walid Ibrahim, the company’s General Manager. He spoke about his technical background and how he entered the world of coffee, recalling his very first business venture, which started within his family when he persuaded them to buy his personal computer. At that time, the price of a computer was equivalent to that of a small car, like a Fiatan important investment and a big step for them.

He explained: “I felt capable of achieving something, and from that moment I began. I worked for a while as an entrepreneur in the tech field, and coffee was not initially the main activity I envisioned. But about fifteen years ago, my passion for coffee gradually began to grow, until I felt I could do something real in this field, even if I wasn’t sure exactly what it would be.”

He added: “About eighteen months ago, I realized the time had come to take bold steps, and I decided to turn the ‘Escara’ project into a tangible reality rather than just an idea on paper. That’s where the journey beganearly attempts to discover what we could offer, and to identify what would set us apart in the market. We didn’t want to be just another roastery or café.”

He continued: “In fact, it all started in my garage with the team, just like any other startup. We experimented and tasted what we could produce. We invested heavily in ourselves, buying coffee and equipment on our own. Even the large roasting machine took between nine and eleven months to be manufactured and delivered. It took time and effort, but we brought everything together and made it happen here.”

He concluded: “What we aim to provide is not just coffee, but an entirely different experience. We focus on transforming the customer’s journey with coffee, and everything we do revolves around that. The customer is at the core of our work, and we care about them 100%.”

Afterwards, our friend Kobi Tolentino guided us through an engaging lecture, followed by a practical exercise: a coffee tasting in colors. We began to connect colors with flavors and discovered how colors could open up a new gateway to sensory evaluation and a deeper understanding of the coffee world. The experience was truly fascinating and demonstrated how innovation can add an entirely new dimension to coffee culture in Dubai and the wider region.

As Kobi Tolentino noted during the lecture: “Colors are not a substitute for established tasting standards, but rather a simple and friendly entry point that helps people express what they taste more easily.”

Project Background

The idea of “coffee in colors” combines traditional sensory evaluation with color associations to create a more accessible and engaging experience for the public. Research conducted by Scarab revealed that the color brown dominates most tasting sessions, linked to fundamental notes like roast, nuts, and cocoa. By contrast, yellow emerged as a marker of bright acidity in coffees from Honduras and Costa Rica, while pink was tied to delicate floral and fruity notes in some Colombian Gesha varieties.

More “exotic” colors, such as blue and purple, also appeared, representing freshness and dark fruit notes. However, they rarely dominated the tasters’ perceptions. Through this framework, Scarab aims to make evaluation more intuitive, inclusive, and precise, while maintaining professional standards in specialty coffee.

Dubai as a Hub for Coffee Innovation

This experience is not an isolated case. Dubai has become a regional hub for specialty coffee, hosting competitions, championships, and a wave of innovations that are reshaping the way coffee is understood and enjoyed. The “coffee in colors” initiative is a distinctive addition, proving that the city is not only a meeting place for coffee lovers but also a true laboratory for innovative ideas that could redefine the future of the industry.
