The world’s mood is in danger… Where are coffee and tea prices heading?

Coffee, cocoa, and tea have long held their place as cherished and integral parts of daily life for millions of people across the globe. The soothing aroma of a freshly brewed cup of coffee or a fragrant pot of tea has been a source of comfort and joy for generations. However, the tranquility and contentment derived from these beverages are now under threat, with concerns looming over the increasing prices and potential shortages of these stimulants, and this precarious situation can be attributed to various factors that have emerged as formidable challenges.

The global economic landscape has experienced significant turbulence in recent years, leaving no sector untouched, and the world of coffee, cocoa, and tea is no exception. This upheaval has created inflationary pressures that are now being felt in the pricing of these beloved commodities. The rise in prices is a cause for concern, as it affects not just the economic aspects but also the everyday rituals and habits of individuals.

Moreover, the shadow of climate change looms large over the agricultural crops that give us coffee, cocoa, and tea. These crops are primarily cultivated in tropical regions where changing weather patterns and environmental challenges are becoming increasingly prevalent. Droughts, unseasonal frosts, and other climate-related issues have taken a toll on these crops, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and pessimism regarding future yields.

Coffee, in particular, has experienced a price surge of epic proportions over the last four years, with an astonishing 200 percent increase. Coffee enthusiasts worldwide have felt the impact of this unprecedented rise in the price of their beloved brew. The steep ascent of coffee prices is attributed to a multitude of factors, including the escalating costs of production and disruptions in the supply chain. However, a significant source of concern is the unpredictability of climate conditions in coffee-producing nations, many of which are still grappling with the effects of climate change on their agricultural practices.

To put it in perspective, recent data from the American website “Barchart” revealed that the price of coffee, specifically the Robusta variety, which is known for its robust and bitter flavor, reached a staggering $2,688 per ton in September of this year. This surge in prices has left coffee lovers and the coffee industry alike in a state of trepidation. The reasons behind this price hike are complex, intertwined with not only production costs but also supply chain challenges that have disrupted the flow of coffee from farms to cups.

Coffee is not the only commodity experiencing these dramatic price fluctuations. Tea, which is cherished for its diverse flavors and calming properties, is also being affected by these global factors. The shifts in climate patterns have the potential to impact tea production, as the delicate leaves are susceptible to variations in temperature and rainfall. With the rise in unpredictable weather events and changing climates, tea plantations may face new challenges in the coming years, which could influence the availability and pricing of this beloved beverage.

Cocoa, the magical ingredient that transforms into indulgent chocolates and treats, is not exempt from these concerns either. By the end of the first half of this year, cocoa prices reached their highest level in nearly five decades on the Intercontinental Exchange in London. This substantial price increase is a direct consequence of the difficulties faced in cocoa production, largely attributed to adverse weather conditions in the West African regions where a significant portion of the world’s cocoa is grown.

The challenges faced by coffee, cocoa, and tea extend beyond just the economic sphere. They touch upon the cultural and lifestyle aspects of millions of people who have long found solace, comfort, and pleasure in these beverages. As the world grapples with economic uncertainties and the ever-growing impact of climate change, the future of these commodities remains uncertain, leaving coffee, cocoa, and tea enthusiasts to wonder whether the cup that has been a source of solace for so long will remain as accessible and affordable as it once was.

Cultivating Change: Empowering Indonesian Coffee Farmers with Komasti Varieties

In recent years, Indonesia, a global coffee powerhouse, has grappled with the challenges of climate change and an increase in pests and diseases affecting coffee production. For the 2023/24 season, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS) has forecasted a 32% drop in Indonesian coffee exports due to supply shortages caused by heavy rainfall disrupting the production process and diminishing yields.

Addressing these challenges head-on, the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI) has embarked on agricultural research endeavors. One significant breakthrough is Komasti, an arabica variety celebrated for its robust disease resistance and high yield potential. While officially introduced in 2013, Komasti has struggled to gain traction among farmers due to limited awareness, testing, and accessibility.

In 2022, ICCRI joined forces with World Coffee Research (WCR) to initiate a demonstration plot program in West Java, aiming to showcase Komasti’s exceptional performance to local farmers.

“We envision building a thriving coffee community around these demonstration plots—this program could set the gold standard for arabica coffee cultivation in Indonesia,” says one enthusiastic proponent.

In its initial phase, WCR, with support from industry partners Frinsa Agrolestari and PT Sucafina Indonesia, established the demonstration plots and oversaw their first year. As the program advances into 2023, these partners will assume local management and continue monitoring the project’s development.

While the inaugural harvest is anticipated between May and July of 2025, Nuzul Qudri, WCR’s Regional Project Manager in Asia, notes that farmers in the vicinity of the demo plots have already shown interest in Komasti. They’ve observed its vigor during the early growth stages, surpassing existing local varieties.

ICCRI is confident that the demonstration plots will effectively convey to farmers that Komasti can deliver higher yields than the currently prevalent varieties in Indonesia. This is a crucial factor in enabling farmers to adapt to the ongoing challenges posed by climate change.

Furthermore, ICCRI intends to expand the demo plot program into other arabica and robusta growing regions, ensuring the efficient distribution of their innovative varieties.

Dini Astika Sari, Director of ICCRI, underscores the importance of disseminating these new varieties: “The dissemination of our new variety is a pivotal step towards sustainable coffee production in Indonesia. By introducing farmers and coffee stakeholders to our superior variety through this program, we aim to provide growers with better planting materials, boost their income, and foster a resilient coffee community around the demonstration plots. This program could very well become a beacon for exceptional arabica coffee cultivation in Indonesia.”

World of Coffee Dubai 2024 highlights promising prospects for development and expansion of coffee industry in UAE

DXB Live, the integrated event management and experiential agency of the Dubai World Trade Centre, continues the preparations for the 3rd edition of the World of Coffee exhibition, which will be held from 21st to 23rd January 2024.

With expectations that the coffee market in the UAE will grow at an annual rate of 8.4 per cent between 2023 and 2029, and by about 7.5 per cent annually in the Middle East and Africa between 2022 and 2027, the exhibition is witnessing a wide regional and global interest from industry leaders, experts and specialists.

As per a report by Statista, coffee markets in Dubai and the region are experiencing substantial growth, with individual coffee consumption in the UAE expected to reach 1.36 kg in 2023 and the coffee market in Dubai expected to generate sales of over AED 1 billion this year. These figures reflect the industry’s attractiveness and growing demand for coffee products, as Dubai provides an ideal environment for the growth of the coffee market, owing to the presence of global coffee shop brands and the emirate’s role as a regional coffee trade hub, with export revenues exceeding AED 3.5 billion over the last decade.

The World of Coffee Dubai 2024 represents a turning point for the sector in the UAE, which has surpassed the tangible effects of this growth in the coffee market and has reached neighbouring Arab markets, attracting more specialised international brands, in light of the attention given to coffee culture and the variety of offerings provided by Dubai, which is famous for providing innovative experiences in this industry.

Khalid Al Hammadi, Senior Vice President at DXB LIVE, emphasised that Dubai’s economic status and distinctive infrastructure have positioned the emirate as a leading destination for organising and hosting prominent events at regional and worldwide levels. Al Hammadi said: “Through the World of Coffee Dubai exhibition, we hope to contribute to Dubai’s efforts in achieving its strategic goals by developing and diversifying various economic sectors. Additionally, we aim to facilitate building and strengthening relations between participants and companies within the coffee market of UAE and the region.”

“The participation of major brands, companies, and specialists underlines the exhibition’s importance and the international community’s trust in it, and the major role of Dubai in enhancing the regional and international trade movement.” Al Hammadi added.

Technology

Omran Al Hammadi, CEO of Que Trading Group, said: “We are excited to participate for the third time in the World of Coffee Dubai 2024. The exhibition provides us with the remarkable opportunity to explore new avenues, strengthen their presence, and contribute to the growth of this booming industry. During the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to discover our most recent products, which include modern and high-quality coffee makers and a wide range of advanced tools and accessories.”

“At our booth, we will conduct in-depth evaluations of the Coffee Tech Engineering Roaster Machines. Additionally, our expert team will showcase the industry’s leading commercial coffee machines, such as the Rocket Sotto Banco, Rocket R9V, and Rocket Appartamento TCA, which integrate cutting-edge technology of the highest quality. By participating in this exhibition, we further reaffirm our dedication to offering coffee aficionados the greatest products. We also look forward to developing fruitful connections and solid collaborations through this significant regional event.” Omran added.

Status

Dubai has a unique status because it is home to several international coffee shops and companies. The World of Coffee Dubai gives companies and cafés the opportunity to provide new and unique experiences for coffee lovers who want to stay up with Dubai’s fast-paced lifestyle. According to Statista predictions for 2022, 82 per cent of worldwide coffee revenues are created by consumption in cafes and restaurants, while 18 per cent of revenues are generated by domestic consumption, which is anticipated to fall by two degrees by 2025.

The current lifestyle trend has been propelling the coffee industry forward, with increased consumption and the development of places that provide it. This tremendous success has compelled major Emirati coffee businesses to expand locally, regionally, and globally to express the Emirati hospitality culture to the globe and strengthen its position as a leading global coffee hub.

Opportunities

Vinícius Estrela, Executive-Director at Brazilian Speciality Coffee ‘BSCA’, said: “We are thrilled to participate in the World of Coffee for the third consecutive year. Our commitment to participating in this event stems from our conviction that the exhibition is particularly significant as it sheds light on the most prominent trends within the coffee industry. Given that the MENA region is one of the biggest markets for Brazilian products in general and coffee in particular, the exhibition serves as a prominent venue for examining innovative prospects to enhance cooperation between the sector’s major players as well as the opportunities provided by local coffee markets.”

“At BSCA, we are excited about this participation, in line with our commitment to fostering collaborations between Brazilian and international coffee markets. We seek to share our knowledge of utilising technology to enhance coffee production, promote sustainable and environment friendly industrial and commercial methodologies in the coffee sector, and highlight Brazil’s remarkable legacy in coffee production.” Estrela added.

Diversity

The exhibition represents the UAE’s significant demographic and cultural diversity, which are essential aspects of the country’s coffee market that has witnessed a high demand for varieties of coffee. Meeting all these demands necessitate the availability of a diverse range of coffee varieties and preparation styles, allowing global companies to participate in broader opportunities to strengthen their presence locally and regionally.

USA Coffee and Yavuz Sultan Selim

Washington Post: Starbucks owner should thank Yavuz Sultan Selim

The article published in The Washington Post, in which it was stated that “Coffee all over the world actually has an Ottoman history”, came to the fore again on October 1, World Coffee Day.

In the article signed by Alan Mikhail, it was noteworthy that the Ottoman Empire became an economic power center with its size and the leadership Selim I showed in controlling this vast geography.

The article included the following striking statements about coffee:

“I. One of the factors that drove the economy of the empire from the reign of Selim to the beginning of the 18th century was the control of the global coffee trade. In fact, it was Sultan Selim’s army during the Yemen campaign that first discovered this bright red berry plant. The Ottomans discovered how to turn these grains into beverages and built places specific to drinking coffee. We Americans (and, of course, Starbucks owner Howard Schultz) have Ottoman Sultan Selim to thank for coffee shops. Few of us appreciate that an Ottoman sultan was the one who turned trade into geopolitics and monopolized the supply of one of the world’s first unique mass consumer goods.

Now, do you understand the relationship between being a world power and trade-culture?

“Coffee comes from Yemen”

Yes, let’s continue with our proverb. Let’s give justice to justice.
Coffee coming from the northern regions of Yemen is one of the oldest in the world. Yemen Mocha Mattari is the best coffee exported from the country’s Mokhaport.
Yemen’s Mocha port, which went down in history as the first place where coffee cultivation took place, is the port where Yemeni coffee has been distributed to the world from past to present.

THE NAME OF CAFE MOCA IS FROM YEMEN’S CITY MOKHA

It became so famous that it used this name to name its coffees and blends by exploiting foreign sources. The chocolate notes found in Yemen coffee also inspired “Mocha”, an espresso-based chocolate drink.
Mokha 1450, which provides boutique coffee services in Dubai, and its CEO, Garfield Kerr, introduced me to the delicious coffee of Yemen and explained its history and culture, which made me say that this is how the past and the future met. Coffee is a unique experience.
Yemen is the key location for the spread of coffee to the world through the Ottoman Empire.
There are dozens of stories about the discovery and spread of coffee. The most accepted discovery story is the goats of the shepherd Kaldi, which everyone who is interested in coffee knows. Coffee, which started to be cultivated in Yemen in the mid-1400s, was introduced to Mecca and Egypt after Yemen. The first coffeehouse in Cairo was opened in 1521. . In the same years, coffeehouses were opened in Aleppo, Damascus, Baghdad and Tehran.
Coffee came to Istanbul after Cairo, Damascus and Aleppo, which were within the Ottoman Empire at the time.
It is rumored that coffee was first brought to Turkey by two Syrians named Hükm and Şems in 1555. In some other sources, it is recorded that during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566), the Governor of Abyssinia, Özdemir Pasha, liked coffee very much and brought it to Istanbul during his visit.

The coffee brewed with special ceremonies in the palace was served to the guests by specially trained coffee makers on trays and cups decorated with precious stones and gold.
That’s why they said “Coffee comes from Yemen”.
We replaced the special coffee beans from Yemen with low-quality Rio Minas beans. Unfortunately, the coffee beans that the Turkish palate is accustomed to today no longer come from Yemen, but from Brazil.

Specific dates that should be taken into account… When do we drink coffee?

Many people continue to drink coffee immediately after waking up because of its effective role in improving mood, but there is scientific evidence that confirms that drinking coffee immediately after waking up is not “correct,” and that benefiting from it comes from drinking it at the appropriate time.

Coffee is a favorite drink among all people, including Germans, which is confirmed by estimates that 73 percent of Germans drink coffee daily. While the percentage of Germans who do not drink coffee at all is only 6 percent. There are many studies on this drink compared to other drinks. Most of the test results were positive and clearly confirm that this drink is a completely healthy stimulant.

Coffee strengthens memory and prevents diabetes. It contains antioxidants and provides the body with a large amount of energy. It also reduces the risk of developing serious diseases, including liver cancer, skin cancer, and nerve diseases, which is something that many may not know.

The results of studies may sometimes conflict about the effect of coffee on some diseases, such as cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer’s, but most of these studies confirm that coffee protects against these diseases. In addition, researchers have proven in two recent studies that drinking coffee and tea together has a positive effect on cognition. Note that drinking tea alone does not effectively affect the problem of cognitive impairment, but a recent study confirmed that drinking coffee between 3 to 5 times a day in middle age helps reduce the incidence of dementia by 65 percent, according to what was reported on the German “Gesundheit Identity” website. In health affairs.

It is not recommended to drink coffee immediately after waking up

There is no doubt that the delicious taste of coffee and its ability to improve the mood every morning prompts many people to continue drinking it daily. According to the German “Gesunde Ernerung” website, obtaining the full benefits of coffee depends on knowing the appropriate time to drink it. To benefit from morning coffee, researchers advise not drinking it immediately after waking up. Rather, you must wait a little and then drink it. Researchers attribute this to the fact that the adrenal gland secretes, upon waking, the hormone cortisol, known as the “stress” hormone, and this hormone helps the body regain the ability to perform its functions, thus providing the body with its energy naturally. By consuming caffeine immediately after waking up, the level of energy in the body increases excessively.

On the other hand, drinking coffee two hours after waking up gives the body more energy when its natural energy begins to gradually decline. Which means that the most appropriate time to drink morning coffee and benefit from the effect of caffeine on the body is around eight-thirty, when waking up at seven, for example.

Coffee’s Heart-Boosting Magic: Expert Prescribes It as an Antioxidant Elixir

In a recent interview with “Moscow 24,” renowned dietitian Elena Solomatina revealed the heart-healthy benefits of coffee, shedding light on its lesser-known properties.

“Coffee contains antioxidants, such as polyphenols found in red grapes, renowned for their beneficial effects. They play a vital role in maintaining the health of our cardiovascular system, shielding our heart and blood vessels from premature aging and the damaging effects of free radicals,” stated the expert.

Dr. Solomatina also emphasized that coffee is rich in vitamin PP, known for fortifying blood vessel walls.

While advocating for the consumption of this delightful brew, Dr. Solomatina recommended a moderate intake of no more than four cups per day.

Economic Factors Prompt Russian Coffee Shops to Adjust Quality Standards

Russian coffee shops are considering a shift in their coffee quality standards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations and rising coffee prices. Sergei, the sales manager at RTC-Trading Rybenko, a company that imports green coffee beans to Russia, explained the potential reasoning behind this shift.

“Since coffee is primarily purchased in dollars, the current high exchange rates are substantially eroding purchasing power. As a result, it’s likely that coffee shop owners will opt for lower-quality coffee to counterbalance these economic challenges. The exchange rate’s impact on the consumer market now outweighs the fluctuations in Arabica and Robusta coffee stock prices. It’s important to note that this doesn’t necessarily reflect on coffee production, which continues to be sourced from Central America, Africa, and Asia. Importantly, there aren’t any indications of imminent changes in coffee supply from these countries,” Sergei emphasized in an interview with RIA Novosti.

In a response to these economic challenges, Alla Bondarenko, General Manager of TanukiFamily, acknowledged that “over the past year, the company has observed an increase in coffee purchase prices.” However, she emphasized that “we are currently maintaining our retail prices as an effort to mitigate profit margins while preserving customer loyalty.”

Sergei clarified that Arabica coffee prices have remained stable at around 150-160 cents per pound for the past 3-5 months, compared to 90-100 cents in 2020. Additionally, he noted that robusta prices reached $2.8 thousand per ton in June but have since decreased to $2.4 thousand. “Notably, the prices for basic Arabica and Robusta are now very close to each other, with minimal differences, especially in retail,” he pointed out.

Despite the economic pressures, experts believe that the entry of coffee chains like Shokoladnitsa into the retail market is not solely due to rising prices and supply issues.

Petr Kabin, founder of the paper manufacturer ProstoKap coffee glasses, shared his insight, stating, “For Shokoladnitsa, venturing into retail is a part of their natural development strategy. In the retail sector, they see opportunities for higher margins and brand monetization through additional product offerings. This strategic approach is widespread in the global coffee brand market.”

Oleg Suzhaev, founder and CEO of the Restik company, which serves 400 coffee shops across Russia, commented on the situation, highlighting that coffee shops have already worked diligently to select reliable suppliers and ideal coffee varieties and blends.

“The logical choice for them is to secure these products in larger quantities, boosting profits through additional sales. Another rationale for coffee shops selling coffee beans is to enhance customer retention and loyalty to their establishment,” Suzhaev explained.

UK Coffee Week to Bring Clean Water to 40,000 Ethiopian Coffee Farmers

Over 450 coffee shops across the UK are set to take part in UK Coffee Week, raising money for a new project to bring clean water to 40,000 coffee farmers in Berbere, Ethiopia.

The project, led by non-profit Project Waterfall, will construct a gravity-flow water system, comprising a 500m3 reservoir and a solar pumping system. Additionally, the project will install 11 WASH kiosks, to ensure the water system is financially sustainable through collecting fees for the water, and construct climate resilient, equitable and inclusive water supply and sanitation facilities in three local schools and two healthcare centres.

The district of Berbere has been identified by the Government of Ethiopia as one of the highest-ranking areas in need of climate resilient water supplies, with unpredictable changes in rainfall patterns and deforestation causing increased risk of flooding and drought.

Each business participating in UK Coffee Week, whether a single-store independent coffee shop or multi-site international coffee chain, decides their own way to raise funds – from donating 10p from every coffee sold to organising events, raffles and bake sales.

“UK Coffee Week is an opportunity for us all to come together and make an impact on the communities that make our livelihoods possible,” said Chintal Patel, Founder and CEO of Project Waterfall. “By supporting UK Coffee Week, you can help to bring clean water, sanitation and education to coffee growing communities in Berbere, Ethiopia.”

UK Coffee Week takes place from 16-22 October 2023. To find out more about how you can get involved, visit the UK Coffee Week website.

What happens to your body when you drink coffee every day?

Coffee has been praised for centuries, either for its taste or its fresh aroma, and some have even considered it one of the greatest “inventions” in the world.

For many people, a cup of coffee is a daily routine, where they drink it before even thinking about doing anything in their day, and for others, there’s nothing better than having it in the middle of the day.

According to a survey by market research firm Drive Research published in July last year, nearly 75% of adults in the United States drink coffee daily.

But a cup of coffee may be more useful than just a daily routine or giving someone the energy to get through the day easily and focus. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, it is a natural source of phosphorus and magnesium.

If you are one of the many people who drink coffee every day, it is important to know what this habit does to your body, both in terms of benefits and risks, according to an article on the website “Eating Well” that compiled both from many studies.

Health benefits of coffee

  • More energy

Coffee beans contain caffeine, a natural stimulant that can help you feel more alert, as it stimulates the central nervous system, which helps people get more energy.

  • Improved mood

Many coffee lovers agree that a good cup of coffee is a ticket to happiness. And there is actual data to support this idea.

A study published in 2019 in the journal “Physiology and Pharmacology Basic and Clinical” found that healthy adults experienced an improvement in mood 30 minutes after consuming caffeine.

Drinking regular coffee led to a more significant improvement in mood than drinking decaffeinated coffee.

  • Reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease

Coffee also contains a number of biologically active polyphenol compounds that may support certain aspects of our health, including brain health.

Evidence published in 2021 in the journal “International Journal of Molecular Sciences” suggests that coffee consumption may be associated with a lower risk of developing some neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia.

  • Heart and blood vessels

According to a study published in 2018 in the journal “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry,” daily coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

  • Improved thyroid function

A study published in 2023 in the journal “Nutrition” found a potential link between moderate caffeine intake and improved thyroid function among people with metabolic disorders.

Potential risks

While coffee consumption is associated with some great benefits, there are also some potential risks.

  • Anxiety

Excessive caffeine intake is associated with an increased risk of anxiety, according to research published in 2020 in the journal “Nutrients”.

Another study published in 2021 found that consuming larger amounts of caffeine is also associated with sleep disturbances and decreased appetite.

  • Increased risk of fractures

Coffee consumption is associated with negative effects on bone health, according to some data, and the more coffee is consumed, the higher the risk of fractures, especially for older adults.

  • Potential complications of pregnancy

Organizations such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggest that it is safe to consume up to 200 milligrams of caffeine per day during pregnancy.

However, new evidence suggests that even small amounts of caffeine may come with some risks. An analysis published in the journal “BMJ” in 2021 found that 14 studies suggest that caffeine intake during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage and low birth weight.

  • Potential increase in blood pressure

Regular coffee consumption is often associated with both positive and negative effects on blood pressure.

While short-term consumption may cause a slight and temporary increase in blood pressure, studies, such as those published in 2022 in the journal “Blood Pressure,” show that long-term consumption does not lead to sustained increases in blood pressure.

However, individual responses to coffee may vary, and those with specific health conditions, or who are at risk for high blood pressure, should consult a doctor.

Conclusion

In conclusion, coffee has both potential benefits and risks. Consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, which is about four cups of coffee, is generally considered safe for most adults. However, it is important to be aware of the potential risks, especially for pregnant women, people with anxiety or mood disorders, and those with certain health conditions.
