Coffee Intelligence:Five words that will define the coffee industry in 2024

Dubai, January 19, 2024 (QW): The global coffee industry has witnessed major transformations in the past year, with 2023 marked by large-scale acquisitions and mergers as specialty coffee continues to consolidate.

Looking ahead to the next 12 months, Coffee Intelligence identified five key words that it said will define the coffee industry through 2024.

1. Consolidation

The trend of acquisitions and mergers witnessed in the previous year is expected to persist in 2024. Fueled by a desire to secure market share in a rapidly growing industry where brand equity is paramount, larger companies are likely to acquire smaller specialty coffee brands. This marks a shift toward the mass commercialization of specialty coffee, a development that draws both interest and concern from industry stakeholders.

Spencer, an industry expert, expresses a sentiment of sadness as multi-generational, family-run coffee businesses are absorbed into larger corporations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining brand identity and differentiation.

2. RTD (Ready-to-Drink)

The dominance of Ready-to-Drink coffee continues to shape industry discussions, representing the epitome of convenience in coffee purchasing. As this market segment expands, 2024 is expected to bring greater diversification with an influx of new flavors and formats. RTD’s growth is not only influencing coffee consumption but also providing opportunities for innovative coffee-based beverages, including cocktails and cordials.

Spencer Turer, Vice President of Coffee Enterprises, foresees creative innovation in coffee-based beverages as RTD continues to evolve, offering a natural progression for brand expansion.

3. Cold Coffee

Parallel to the rise of RTD, cold coffee is poised to steer the industry’s future. Starbucks reported that cold drinks accounted for about three-quarters of its total sales in the US in the previous year, underscoring the significance of this trend. Cold coffee, particularly popular among younger consumers, offers a platform for customization, with brands increasingly prioritizing diverse offerings such as flavored syrups and alternative milks.

Anticipating significant innovation in how retail locations present cold coffee options, 2024 is expected to witness the growth of this trend, potentially revolutionizing how coffee drinks are conceptualized and enjoyed.

4. Credit

The industry faces financial challenges in 2024, with high interest rates affecting coffee traders relying on finance for their business models. The perfect storm of rising interest rates and increased demand for cheaper coffees squeezes margins for traders, leaving some unable to cover their debts. As smaller boutique traders experience financial difficulties, the larger commercial traders acquire them, further consolidating the industry.

The cost of agroindustrial loans remains high, constraining farmers’ access to finance. With declining coffee prices and persistent high interest rates, only the largest coffee traders may find breathing room in the challenging financial landscape of 2024.

5. Retail

Specialty coffee roasters made notable entries into supermarkets in 2023, signaling a recognition by traditional marketplaces of the demand for higher-quality coffee. As the commercialization of specialty coffee continues, established roasters are expected to pivot to new channels, such as supermarkets, to reach a broader market.

To operate successfully in these arenas, roasters may initially offer more accessible blends to cater to a wider market less familiar with third-wave coffee. The trend reflects a broader consolidation in the industry, as some specialty coffee brands pivot to sustain growth.

Jesse Hartman of The Coffee Podcast predicts that creativity, novelty, and influencer recommendations will shine brighter in 2024, highlighting the evolving dynamics of customer preferences in the coffee market.

Bacha Coffee Expands Global Footprint with New Stores in Dubai and Taipei

Bacha Coffee, the renowned Moroccan heritage coffee brand under the umbrella of V3 Gourmet, a subsidiary of Singapore-based V3 Group, is making significant strides in its international expansion. The brand, embedded in the rich V3 Gourmet heritage, has recently unveiled its latest ventures in Taipei and Dubai, bringing the total count to 13 stores in East Asia and three in the Middle East, complemented by standalone locations in Morocco and France.

This month witnessed the inauguration of Bacha Coffee’s first establishments in Taiwan and the UAE. The brand’s entry into the bustling Taiwanese market took place at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store in Xinyi Xintiandi, Taipei, on January 9, followed by a second opening at Dubai Mall a week later. Notably, the Taipei store, spanning 1,500 square feet, distinguishes itself as the first Bacha Coffee store globally to offer a retail coffee boutique, a 14-seat coffee bar, and a takeaway counter—all seamlessly integrated into a single space.

Taha Bouqdib, President & CEO of V3 Gourmet, expressed his excitement about the new endeavors, stating, “The city of Taipei is a vessel of life, vibrantly reminiscent of the age-old medina of Marrakech during coffee’s golden era. Bacha Coffee’s latest destination imprints its legacy in the beauty of modern Taipei, where people past, present, and tomorrow share their timeless appreciation for 100% arabica coffee.”

With the addition of the Taipei store, Bacha Coffee continues to solidify its presence in East Asia, operating nine stores in Singapore, two in Malaysia, and one in Hong Kong. The company sees East Asia as a pivotal market for growth and, in August 2023, outlined plans for further expansion in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), covering nine cities in China’s Guangdong province, Hong Kong, and Macau. Further, Bacha Coffee is poised to make its debut in Indonesia in 2024 with an outlet at Jakarta’s Plaza Senayan shopping center.

The Dubai Mall outlet, spanning almost 2,000 square feet, follows Bacha Coffee’s initial entry into the Middle East with locations in Qatar and Kuwait at the end of 2023. Originating in Marrakech in 1910, Bacha Coffee achieved fame with its original café in the Dar el Bacha palace, frequented by notable figures such as US President Franklin Roosevelt and UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill. V3 Gourmet, following renovation, reopened Bacha Coffee’s Dar el Bacha store in November 2023. Additionally, Bacha Coffee operates a single site in France.

Pinnacle Group’s Entrance into the Coffee Industry

Tareq Alshaikh’s inspiration to invest in the coffee industry stemmed from a deep-rooted entrepreneurial spirit instilled by his family. Growing up surrounded by successful entrepreneurs, Alshaikh developed a keen interest in the Australian specialty coffee culture, which redefined coffee as a nuanced and artisanal product. Recognizing the shortfalls in existing ‘second wave’ coffee brands dominating the Middle East, Pinnacle Group aimed to introduce the best and strongest brands to the region, leading to their strategic partnership with Toby’s Estate.

Attraction to Toby’s Estate Brand

The decision to invest in Toby’s Estate was motivated by the brand’s exceptional reputation for quality and commitment to sustainability. Witnessing the global acclaim of Toby’s Estate in Australia, Pinnacle Group saw an opportunity to introduce Middle Eastern coffee enthusiasts to the brand’s diverse and meticulously curated coffees. Key Learnings from Building the Brand in the Middle East

Alshaikh emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting local coffee culture, adapting the Toby’s Estate experience to complement existing preferences, and providing personalized customer engagement. Navigating distribution complexities underscored the significance of building strong local partnerships, understanding regulatory frameworks, and ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality coffee. Tailoring marketing approaches to resonate with diverse demographics and embracing sustainability and corporate social responsibility played crucial roles in building loyalty among Middle Eastern consumers.

Pinnacle Group’s Accelerated Growth Model for Toby’s Estate

The core strategy for accelerated growth revolves around emphasizing coffee quality, excellent customer service, a wellbeing-focused menu, beautifully designed spaces, strategic locations, and building a community around cafes. Innovation, including menu innovation, sustainability, and operational efficiency, sits at the heart of the strategy. The recently launched Toby’s Estate App, leveraging digital platforms for ordering and loyalty, has been a success in enhancing efficiency and convenience.

Future Strategies for Toby’s Estate

Toby’s Estate’s strategic foray into the Ready-to-Drink (RTD) coffee segment is pivotal for growth. The RTD range caters to on-the-go consumers, offering meticulously crafted cold brews and iced coffees. The establishment of a state-of-the-art roasting and manufacturing facility in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, reflects the commitment to quality and expansion into new markets.

As Toby’s Estate continues to explore new horizons, the focus remains on cultivating a global community that shares a passion for exceptional coffee experiences. World Coffee Research Boosts Uganda’s Coffee Production Goals through Nursery and Seed Lot Development

Dubai January 18, 2024(QW):In a significant stride towards achieving Uganda’s ambitious coffee production targets, World Coffee Research (WCR), in collaboration with the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) and the Uganda National Coffee Research Institute (NaCORI), has been actively working on enhancing the country’s nursery and seed sector. The concerted effort aims to quadruple coffee production to 20 million bags by 2030, as outlined in Uganda’s Coffee Roadmap.

Over the past year, various initiatives have been undertaken, including the publication of open-access, localized training materials, workshops for nursery operators, evaluation and cleanup of seed lots, and the distribution of high-quality C. arabica and C. robusta seedlings across growing regions in Uganda.

Robert Adomati, UGACOF Field Officer, highlights the impact of supplying quality planting materials, stating, “increasing productivity, easing the accessibility of high-yielding varieties, and improving farmer incomes.”

The collaboration focuses on transforming Uganda’s coffee sector to benefit approximately 1.5 million households engaged in sustainable coffee farming. It aligns with the nine key initiatives of the Coffee Roadmap, with a goal to increase yields by 3-4 times compared to 2019-21 productivity rates and expand production land by 20%.

One of the primary challenges addressed is the mass propagation of improved planting material and seedling distribution. Uganda, a major producer and exporter of robusta coffee, faces hurdles in this process. WCR, in partnership with UCDA, is working to strengthen local nurseries to supply improved varieties, including 10 Coffee Wilt Disease (CWD)-resistant clonal lines, commercially released as NARO Kituza Robusta (KR) 1-10.

Funded by Strauss Coffee B.V. and WCR member companies globally, the project aims to deliver 100,000 healthy KR plants to farmers. In collaboration with UGACOF/Sucafina, nearly 50,000 KR plants have already been supplied to farmers in the Greater Masaka region, supporting the establishment of profitable and self-sustaining nurseries managed by coffee farmers.

Sjaak De Bloois, Head of Sustainability & Agronomy for UGACOF, expressed pride in the quick results of the partnership, with the remaining 50,000 plants set to be supplied in 2024. These farmers will also receive support for UCDA certification, ensuring compliance with local regulatory standards.

Furthermore, WCR, UCDA, and NaCORI are actively optimizing Uganda’s ability to propagate and grow robusta varieties. Training sessions for nursery operators and UCDA extension officers, along with the release of open-access educational resources, demonstrate a commitment to improving skills and knowledge in robusta nursery establishment and management.

Dr. Gerald Kyalo, Director of Agricultural Development Services for UCDA, emphasized the positive impact of the training sessions, stating, “The nursery training has contributed significantly to improving the skills of operators in the Masaka region, hence improving the quality of planting material being multiplied and sold to farmers.”

With these concerted efforts, Uganda is poised to not only meet but exceed its coffee production goals, ensuring sustainable growth for the coffee sector and the livelihoods of millions of Ugandan coffee farmers.

Brewing Coffee with the Origami: A Unique Experience

In today’s market, an abundance of manual coffee brewers awaits enthusiasts, each vying for attention. Among the aesthetically pleasing options, the Origami stands out, gaining widespread popularity after its use by Du Jianing, the 2019 World Brewers Cup Champion. Her victory marked a significant moment as the first Chinese competitor to secure the title.

What sets the Origami apart is its visually appealing design, accommodating both conical and flat bottom paper filters for diverse extraction possibilities. Featuring 20 folded inner ribs, this brewer minimizes clogging, resulting in a cleaner and more flavorful cup.

To delve into the art of brewing with the Origami, insights were sought from industry experts: Sherry Hsu, the 2022 World Brewers Cup Champion, Elysia Tan, co-founder of Homeground Coffee Roasters, and Nozomu Kanenaka, Sales and Marketing Manager at Origami.

Origami Brewer: A Fusion of Design and Functionality

Inspired by the Japanese art of paper folding, Origami’s design and name draw from this creative practice. Crafted by Yasuo Suzuki and Kiyohito Tanaka, founders of Trunk Coffee in Japan, the Origami dripper is made from Mino porcelain, handcrafted at a Gifu prefecture factory. This region’s blend of craftsmanship and technology consistently produces high-quality, durable products.

The 20 evenly-spaced ribs come into play when using conical paper filters, creating space for a faster flow rate and encouraging quicker extraction. On the other hand, Kalita Wave paper filters seamlessly fit into the ribs, transforming it into a flat-bottom brewer. Nozomu highlights additional benefits, emphasizing the continuous refinement process with over 20 revisions since the inception of the dripper.

Origami vs. Other Pour Over Brewers: Uniqueness Explored

While the Origami shares a conical shape with drippers like the Hario V60, it boasts distinct features that set it apart. Sherry Hsu, a seasoned competitor and coffee consultant, appreciates its flexibility, allowing her to alter the brew bed’s shape with different paper filters. Elysia Tan, co-founder of Homeground Coffee Roasters, values the diversity in brewing methods based on the characteristics of different coffees, emphasizing the importance of understanding and leveraging the brewer’s design.

Brewing with the Origami: A Creative Journey

Choosing between porcelain and plastic drippers is the initial decision in the brewing process. Nozomu highlights the heat conductivity difference, favoring plastic for efficiency in competitions where multiple coffees need simultaneous brewing.

The paper filter choice further influences the final brew. Conical paper filters create space for a faster flow rate, while flat bottom filters lead to a slower flow rate due to snug grooves. Sherry emphasizes how these choices impact the brew bed’s shape, affecting the extraction process.

Recommended Recipes: A Glimpse into Expertise

Sherry and Elysia share their Origami recipes, revealing the intricate details behind a successful brew. From water temperature to brew ratio and pouring stages, each step contributes to a unique and flavorful cup.

Tips and Advice for Using the Origami: Navigating the Journey

For beginners, Sherry recommends starting with the Origami Air and a flat-bottomed paper filter for a foolproof and consistent result. Stressing the importance of a faster flow rate, she encourages experimenting with grind size and dose to customize the brewing experience.

The Origami, with its captivating design and innovative features, offers a distinctive manual brewing experience. As users explore its nuances, they can unlock a world of creative possibilities in pursuit of the perfect cup of coffee.
