The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed an international coffee agreement 2022

20 February 2024, London, (QW): The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia made history today, signing the International Coffee Agreement (ICA) 2022 at the International Coffee Organization (ICO) headquarters in London.

This is the first time the country has formally joined the ICO world coffee family, whose history spans 60 years.

Attending the ceremony were representatives from the Saudi Embassy in London and HRH Prince Khalid Bin Bandar Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to the United Kingdom, who signed the trade treaty.

Under the ICA 2022, governments, in collaboration with the private sector and civil society, will come
together to determine initiatives that support a more prosperous and sustainable future for stakeholders within the global coffee value chain.

Coffee is deeply woven into the fabric of life in Saudi Arabia. Historically, it was cultivated by the ancient tribes of Khawlan who lend their name to the prized Khawlani coffee typical of the Jazan region, the cultivation practices of which are inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

As for consumption, the country’s habits represent a blend of modernity and tradition, where the buzz of state-of-the-art espresso machines in Riyadh’s coffee outlets intertwines with the comforting echoes of ancestral practices in homes across the nation. Saudis embrace both international coffee trends and authentic qahwa, often flavoured with cardamom and poured into small ornate cups called finjan. For many, the serving of the beverage is a distinctive cultural ritual and a symbol of the Kingdom’s rich history and hospitality.

ICO Executive Director Vanúsia Nogueira said:“We are honoured to welcome Saudi Arabia as a signatory to the ICA 2022 and hope that this will bring a unique new flavour to our global community. Together in the spirit of international cooperation, we celebrate the diversity of coffee traditions and jointly undertake to safeguard, promote, and sustain the sector. I am sure that our collaboration will thrive as we foster a future where we continue to savour the richness of coffee while advocating for all aspects of sustainability”.

On signing the Agreement, HRH Prince Khalid Bin Bandar Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud commented: “This is a remarkable day for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as we join the International Coffee Organization.

For years, people of Saudi Arabia enjoyed the delights of traditional Arabic coffee, which has a 600 years history and is still regarded as a hallmark of Arabian hospitality today, and is inextricably linked to traditional identity.

The coffee sector in Saudi Arabia is growing fast and is an important part of our plans for the future and the change we wish to bring to our country as it contributes to diversifying the national economy. Public Investment Fund (PIF) launched the Saudi Coffee Company in May 2022, which is investing 319$ million over the next ten years to support the growth of the national coffee industry, with the goal of boosting the country’s production from 300 tons per year to 2500 tons per year, and focusing on achieving sustainability, across the production, distribution and marketing aspects of the coffee supply chain. We see ICO, and this updated agreement, as a key to achieving our hopes and ambitions for the coffee industry locally and globally, and we look forward to working with colleagues at ICO to secure a positive and thriving future for coffee in the years and decades to come.”

International Coffee Organization Explores Coffee’s Positive Impact on Type 2 Diabetes

The International Coffee Organization (ICO) continues its informative series, aiming to highlight the health benefits of our beloved beverage based on the Coffee Guide by the International Trade Centre.

In today’s installment, the organization sheds light on the impact of coffee on type 2 diabetes, revealing a significant correlation between coffee consumption and a reduced risk of this common disease.

The ICO confirms that enjoying 3-4 cups of coffee daily is associated with a substantial 25% decrease in the risk of type 2 diabetes compared to those who consume little or no coffee.

Moreover, the positive effect persists with each additional cup, provided it remains within the recommended limit of up to five cups per day. The organization emphasizes that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee exhibit the same preventive effects.

Beyond diabetes, the series underscores that consuming 3-5 cups of coffee daily may also lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases and death for healthy individuals. Our beloved beverage appears to be more than just a source of warmth and comfort; it can contribute to heart health.

The ICO assures that moderate caffeine intake carries no increased risks of heart and vascular diseases, irregular heartbeats, heart failure, or high blood pressure. Therefore, coffee enthusiasts can rejoice, as indulging in their favorite drink in moderation may be more beneficial than they realize.

It’s worth noting that these valuable insights are based on research conducted by the Scientific Information Institute on Coffee and are extracted from the Coffee Guide affiliated with the International Trade Centre—a rich resource providing insights from the ICO.

While coffee enthusiasts everywhere savor their daily cup, this serves as a reminder that our favorite beverage may pave the way for a healthier future for us all.

Coffee Planet Showcases Innovation and Growth at World of Coffee Dubai 2024

Dubai – Qahwa World

Coffee Planet, part of the Ludlow Coffee Group, made a strong impression at World of Coffee Dubai (21–23 January 2024), held in the city that has been its home since 2005. Following a record-breaking year in 2023 marked by market expansion, product innovation, and a commitment to sustainability, the company presented its largest and most ambitious showcase to date.

The event came during a period of significant growth for Coffee Planet, including the recent opening of a new corporate office, showroom, campus, and café in Abu Dhabi. This expansion reflects the company’s long-standing relationships in the capital and its broader ambition to strengthen its presence across the UAE, the Middle East, and international markets. Supporting this vision is its evolving brand identity and new strapline: “Everyone’s cup of Specialty.”

At World of Coffee Dubai 2024, Coffee Planet unveiled three major product launches:

Ready-to-Drink Cold Brew Range
The company introduced three new cold brew canned beverages: Latte, Caramel Latte (250ml), and Black Nitro (200ml). These products build on the success of its recently launched cold brew concentrate, already gaining traction in key markets, particularly within the HORECA sector. The concentrate offers versatility for cafés, bars, and events, enabling a wide range of beverage creations. The new ready-to-drink cans are expected to expand Coffee Planet’s reach across retail, online, and hospitality channels.

New Single Origin Coffees
Continuing its focus on quality and traceability, Coffee Planet presented a new selection of seasonal single origin coffees. These included three microlots from El Salvador (Santa Ana), Colombia (Hacienda Mallorca), and Guatemala, alongside four new food service single origins sourced from Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ethiopia.

Sustainable Wooden Capsules
A key highlight was the launch of single origin coffees in innovative wooden capsules. Designed to be Nespresso-compatible, these capsules are made from natural wood fibres certified by PEFC and sourced from wood industry by-products. Fully plant-based and produced from renewable materials, they represent Coffee Planet’s commitment to sustainability while delivering a premium coffee experience. Customisation options are also available, allowing clients to tailor capsules to their preferred coffee selections.

Beyond product launches, Coffee Planet created an immersive experience at its stand. Visitors explored a main bar serving popular beverages using advanced equipment, a dedicated brew bar hosting workshops, a capsule display area, and a “Coffee Corner” concept designed for workplace environments.

The stand also featured insights into the Ludlow Coffee Group and its recently launched roastery brand, Jigsaw Coffee Company, which provides private label roasting services for global food and beverage brands and produces Coffee Planet’s full range.

Throughout the three-day event, Coffee Planet hosted interactive sessions, demonstrations, and competitions led by its Campus team and industry partners. Renowned baristas and latte art champions participated, adding energy and engagement to the experience. The company also collaborated with key partners across the exhibition, showcasing its coffees on leading equipment brands and hosting masterclasses.

Jamie Brown, CEO of Coffee Planet and Ludlow Coffee Group, said:
“We were proud to showcase our expertise and latest innovations at World of Coffee Dubai. It was a great opportunity to connect with customers and partners, strengthen relationships, and continue our mission to make specialty coffee accessible to all.”

Fairtrade International Enhances Coffee Standard to Surpass EU Deforestation Regulations

Fairtrade International is revising its coffee standard to align with or surpass the forthcoming regulations of the EU deforestation-free regulations (EUDR).

This sustainability certification organization, dedicated to supporting smallholder farmers globally, is implementing monitoring and reporting requirements for certified coffee producer groups, as well as for buyers and traders within the Fairtrade system. The new standard, effective from 2026, applies to all Fairtrade-certified coffees, not limited to those bound for the EU.

The EUDR, in effect since June 2023 with enforcement for large European companies beginning in January 2025, aims to curb deforestation linked to various agricultural imports in the EU, including coffee.

Fairtrade International’s updated coffee standard offers guidance to approximately 600 coffee cooperatives, representing about 870,000 coffee farmers across 1.1 million hectares, to meet deforestation-free criteria.

Juan Pablo Solis, Fairtrade International’s Senior Advisor for Climate and Environment, emphasized the urgency of addressing climate issues, stating, “There is no denying we are living in an era of climate crisis.”

Approved by the Fairtrade International Standards Committee, the new standard, developed with input from key stakeholders, surpasses EUDR requirements in several aspects. Notably, it establishes a deforestation cut-off date of Jan. 1, 2014, compared to EUDR’s Dec. 31, 2020, cut-off date.

Additionally, the standard mandates producer cooperatives to create prevention and mitigation plans, incorporating satellite-based deforestation monitoring provided by Fairtrade. The organization recently enlisted the services of the Dutch firm Satelligence for satellite monitoring.

While the EUDR requires geolocation data, the Fairtrade standard goes further by obliging producer organizations to collect and report this information to Fairtrade and share it with payers and conveyors. This emphasis on fairness underscores the shared responsibility of all parties involved in protecting the environment.

Fairtrade International had previously increased price minimums and premiums for certified coffees, effective since last August.

PNG Coffees Secure Access to EU Market with Sustainability Partnership

Papua New Guinea’s Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) has partnered with Enveritas, a global sustainability platform, and JDE Peet’s, a major coffee company, to ensure PNG coffee meets new European Union (EU) deforestation regulations. This collaboration will verify that PNG coffee exports comply with the EU’s requirement that coffee be grown on land that was not deforested after 2020.

Key elements of the partnership:

  • Comprehensive monitoring: Enveritas will employ a combination of satellite imagery, machine learning, and on-the-ground teams to assess all PNG coffee lands for deforestation compliance.
  • Transparent supply chain: A robust protocol will identify and remove any coffee found to be grown on land deforested after the regulation’s timeframe.
  • Sustainable practices: JDE Peet’s will collaborate with farmers to reforest any land identified as non-compliant, promoting long-term sustainability.

Benefits of the partnership:

  • Market access: PNG coffee farmers retain access to the lucrative EU market, safeguarding their livelihoods.
  • Environmental protection: The initiative contributes to curbing deforestation, mitigating climate change, and preserving biodiversity.
  • Consumer confidence: Consumers can enjoy PNG coffee with the assurance that it aligns with responsible sourcing practices.

This partnership exemplifies a proactive approach to sustainability within the coffee industry, balancing economic viability with environmental responsibility.

First Africa Coffee Week Propels African Coffee to New Heights

Addis Ababa, February 9/2024 (qw): The 20th African Fine Coffees Conference and Exhibition, accompanied by the inaugural First African Coffee Week, unfolded in Addis Ababa, serving as a groundbreaking event for the advancement of African coffee. Solomon Rutega, IACO Secretary General, expressed optimism in overcoming challenges through a united multi-stakeholder approach, emphasizing the crucial role of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in revitalizing the coffee sector and fostering inter-regional trade among coffee-producing countries.

African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment, Josefa Sacko, underscored AfCFTA as a catalyst for transforming the African coffee sector. The expansive free trade area covers 55 member countries with a market of 1.4 billion consumers and a combined income of 2.5 trillion USD.

Amir Hamza, Chairperson of the African Fine Coffees Conference (AFCA), hailed the event as the largest coffee conference in Africa, providing a unique platform for collaboration among producers, exporters, roasters, traders, and researchers.

Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority Director-General, Adugna Debela, revealed that approximately 20 million people in Ethiopia are directly or indirectly involved in various activities along the coffee value chain. Despite global coffee price fluctuations, Ethiopia earned 1.33 billion USD in 2023, attributing the success to reforms and amended regulations.

In an exclusive interview on February 8, IACO Secretary General Solomon Rutega praised Ethiopia’s highly competitive coffee, citing its premium quality and global acclaim. He emphasized the advantage of 50 percent local consumption, making it competitive in both domestic and international markets.

Rutega highlighted the strategic importance of AfCFTA in promoting inter-regional trade and creating new markets for coffee-producing countries. He noted that North Africa’s high per capita coffee consumption presented a significant opportunity for African coffee producers.

Regarding the need for a massive transformation in the African coffee sector, Rutega emphasized a unified approach to address challenges and strategize for sectoral transformation. The African Coffee Week in Addis Ababa was identified as a historic event, bringing together governments, regional authorities, and the private sector from across Africa.

As part of the 20th African Fine Coffees Conference and Exhibition, Rainforest Alliance hosted a Sustainability Day in Addis Ababa, focusing on ‘Brewing a Greener Future: Navigating Coffee Farming in a Changing Climate.’

Marla Naidoo, Director of Rainforest Alliance, urged partners to strengthen regenerative coffee farming to combat climate change and biodiversity loss. The event aimed to stimulate dialogue on critical issues faced by the sector, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and inequality.

Dr. Vanusia Nogueira, a Board Member of Rainforest Alliance, emphasized the need for collective efforts and systematic approaches to build resilience in the face of climate change and biodiversity loss. The organization collaborates with various sectors to ensure the sustainability of coffee farming globally.

Dr. Adugna Debela, Director General of the Ethiopia Coffee and Tea Authority, acknowledged the challenges posed by climate change, market fluctuations, and logistical disruptions to the coffee industry. He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts to address industry hurdles, safeguard the livelihoods of coffee farmers, and ensure the long-term prosperity of the global coffee industry.

Rainforest Alliance, known for its certification activities, also highlighted its broader nature-focused initiatives, including agroforestry and regenerative coffee farming in Eastern Africa. The organization operates in over 58 countries, collaborating with coffee farmers and stakeholders to drive positive change in global supply chains.

The Sustainability Day provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies for navigating coffee farming challenges in the context of a changing climate, reinforcing the commitment to responsible business practices in the coffee industry.

A Brief Overview of The 2023 Specialty Coffee Transaction Guide

The eagerly awaited 2023 edition of the Specialty Coffee Transaction Guide (SCTG) has officially been unveiled, offering a robust data-driven resource for participants across the coffee supply chain to navigate the intricacies of green coffee price discovery.

Available for download in both English and Spanish, the comprehensive guide delves into the dynamics of the global specialty coffee market. Noteworthy findings from the 2023 Specialty Coffee Transaction Guide reveal a 3% decrease in the median FOB (free on board) price for specialty coffee contracts in the 2022/23 period, settling at $3.40 per pound, down from $3.50 per pound in the previous year.

In stark contrast, the New York C Price for arabica coffee, established through commodities contract trading on the Intercontinental Exchange, witnessed a substantial 23% decline from an average of $2.25 to $1.73 during the same timeframe.

A significant highlight from the 2023 edition is the ongoing trend indicating that average coffee prices at the highest quality spectrum seem to be less susceptible to the fluctuations of the commodities market. This resilience stands in contrast to the broader specialty market, as observed over the three-year research period covered in the guide.

Originally launched in 2017 by a dedicated team at Emory University in Atlanta and supported by data contributors including traders and roasters, the Specialty Coffee Transaction Guide continues to serve as a valuable free third-party resource for professionals in the green coffee industry. Positioned as a data-driven alternative to traditional price-discovery tools, the guide aims to provide timely and insightful pricing information.

Peter Roberts, the founder of SCTG and Professor of Organization & Management at Emory University, remarked, “With each additional year of data, we are able to provide more timely pricing insights for the people who sell and buy specialty coffees.”

Drawing from anonymized data contributed by 115 companies worldwide, including importers, exporters, and roasters, the 2023 guide presents a summary of more than 50 billion contracts covering nearly 1 billion pounds of green coffee, valued at almost $2.5 billion.

Key parameters such as quality score, purchase volume, and country of origin continue to guide the presentation of contract data in the 2023 guide. Notable trends emerge, shedding light on how the specialty market responded to the downturn in the 2022/2023 average C price, which decreased by 52 cents from the previous year.

Introducing a novel feature, this year’s guide allows users to calculate an appropriate indicator for coffees by applying differentials based on cup score, location, and/or volume to a median price.

It’s crucial to note that the Specialty Coffee Transaction Guide, while illuminating industry trends, does not encompass the entire specialty market. The median prices provided are emphasized as not representing mandatory, correct, or universally appropriate prices. Instead, the guide serves as a valuable tool for stakeholders to understand prevailing prices, assess justifiability, and establish or interpret prices based on historical precedents. As Karl Wienhold, 2023 Specialty Coffee Transaction Guide Research Associate, affirmed, “It’s a tool to let everyone along the chain know what prices are being paid for what types of coffee, whether those prices are justifiable or not, and to know how to set or interpret prices based on precedent.”
