Italy Coffee Market Outlook 2026–2031

Tradition Anchors Growth as Pods, Specialty and RTD Gain Ground

DUBAI – QAHWA WORLD

Italy’s coffee sector is projected to expand steadily through 2031, supported by strong domestic consumption, product innovation and premiumisation trends, even as competition from alternative beverages intensifies.

According to a recent industry analysis published by Research and Markets, the Italian coffee market is estimated at USD 5.92 billion in 2026, up from USD 5.61 billion in 2025. The market is forecast to reach USD 7.71 billion by 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.44% between 2026 and 2031.

A Market Rooted in Culture

Coffee consumption remains deeply embedded in Italy’s daily life and social fabric. Espresso culture, regional roasting traditions and the central role of cafés continue to sustain stable demand across retail and foodservice channels.

Data from the European Coffee Federation shows European coffee sales rising from EUR 2.45 billion in 2022 to EUR 2.57 billion in 2023, reflecting consistent consumption patterns in mature markets such as Italy. The country continues to shape broader European coffee dynamics through its heritage brands and café culture.

Ground coffee remains the backbone of the market, reflecting traditional brewing habits in both households and professional settings.

Segment Performance: Leaders and Fastest Growers

Ground Coffee: Market Leader

Ground coffee accounted for 34.10% of market share in 2025, maintaining its leadership due to Italy’s strong preference for authentic espresso preparation. Its versatility across brewing methods and wide range of blends and roast profiles reinforce its dominance.

Pods and Capsules: Fastest Growth

Coffee pods and capsules represent the fastest-growing segment, with a projected CAGR of 6.31% through 2031. Growth is driven by convenience, single-serve machine adoption and demand for consistent quality in homes and offices. Innovation in cross-compatible systems and flavor diversification continues to support expansion.

Plain Coffee: Cultural Mainstay

Plain coffee holds a commanding 78.20% market share in 2025, underscoring consumer preference for traditional, unflavored coffee that highlights bean quality and roasting craftsmanship.

Flavored Coffee: Emerging Momentum

Flavored coffee is projected to grow at a 7.02% CAGR through 2031, reflecting changing tastes among younger consumers and urban markets seeking diversified flavor experiences.

Innovation and Premiumisation

Italian consumers remain loyal to tradition but increasingly embrace innovation that blends heritage with modern preferences. Product development is expanding into:

  • Specialty and single-origin offerings

  • Ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee

  • Sustainable and ethically sourced products

  • Smart brewing systems

  • E-commerce and digital sales channels

International brands are also adapting to the Italian market. In February 2023, Starbucks Corporation introduced its Oleato olive oil coffee range in Italy, combining espresso with olive oil in beverages designed to align with local culinary identity while offering a differentiated experience.

Sustainability and ethical sourcing are increasingly important purchase drivers, while climate volatility remains a structural risk factor affecting global green coffee supply.

Competitive Pressures from Alternative Beverages

The broader beverage landscape in Italy is evolving. Functional teas, energy drinks, matcha, kombucha and plant-based beverages are gaining visibility, particularly among younger consumers. Specialty tea shops and bubble tea outlets are expanding in major cities, competing with traditional coffee bars as social spaces.

In response, coffee companies are diversifying portfolios to include tea, functional drinks and wellness-oriented beverages, leveraging established distribution networks and brand recognition.

Corporate Spotlight: Illycaffè Expands U.S. Production

Premium Italian roaster Illycaffè plans to begin production in the United States in 2026 as part of its international growth strategy.

Chief Executive Officer Cristina Scocchia stated that between 15% and 20% of the company’s U.S. sales volume will be produced locally starting early next year. The move aims to improve supply chain flexibility and enhance proximity to consumers.

Illycaffè expects overall turnover to rise approximately 10% year-on-year to around €690 million, with reported growth of 11% in Italy and 19% in the United States at constant exchange rates. However, the company faces continued cost pressure from elevated green coffee prices, which rose significantly in 2025 due to weather-related supply disruptions and global market volatility.

Founded in 1933 in Trieste, Illycaffè operates in more than 140 countries and remains a key player in the premium espresso segment.

Market Structure and Key Players

The Italian coffee market is segmented by:

  • Product Type: Whole bean, ground coffee, instant coffee and others

  • Flavor: Plain and flavored

  • Category: Conventional and specialty

  • Bean Type: Arabica, Robusta and others

  • Distribution Channel: On-trade and off-trade

Major companies operating in the market include:

  • Luigi Lavazza S.p.A.

  • Nestlé S.A.

  • Kimbo S.p.A.

  • Starbucks Corporation

  • Gruppo Illy S.p.A.

  • Tchibo GmbH

  • JDE Peet’s N.V.

  • Segafredo Zanetti S.p.A.

  • Massimo Zanetti Beverage Group

Outlook

Italy’s coffee market remains mature but dynamic. Traditional espresso culture continues to anchor demand, while growth is increasingly concentrated in pods, capsules, specialty formats and ready-to-drink beverages.

As sustainability priorities, technological integration and premium positioning reshape the competitive landscape, Italy is expected to maintain its dual role as both a heritage-driven coffee market and a hub for innovation within Europe’s broader coffee industry.

10 Rules for Making Great Coffee: Everything You Didn’t Know About Moka Pots, Pods, and Ground Coffee

Dubai – Qahwa World

Making an excellent cup of coffee is an art and a science. Whether you prefer using a moka pot, coffee pods, or pre-ground coffee, these ten tips will help you perfect your brew and enhance your coffee experience.

  1. Choosing Between Moka, Pods, and Capsules
Your preference matters. Moka coffee tends to have a stronger flavor, capsules offer consistency, and pods are the more sustainable choice.
  2. Checking Your Moka Pot’s Condition
Run your finger along the inside rim of the moka pot’s boiler. If it feels rough instead of smooth, it’s time for a replacement.
  3. Espresso vs. Hyper-espresso Capsules
Hyper-espresso capsules include a special chamber to prevent water leakage, mimicking barista-quality coffee at home. However, they are less environmentally friendly than standard capsules.
  4. Storing Ground Coffee
After opening, consume ground coffee within six days for peak freshness. Storing it in the fridge can extend the flavor and aroma for up to 21 days.
  5. The Moka Pot Technique
For moka lovers, ensure the water level in the boiler stays below the safety valve. Turn off the heat just before the coffee starts to sputter.
  6. Coffee Crema: A Quality Indicator
The crema—the frothy layer on top—dissipates within 3-4 minutes. The longer it lasts, the better the coffee quality. Ideally, it should be a hazelnut shade with hints of dark brown.
  7. Barista Timing for Espresso
At a café, espresso extraction should take 20 to 27 seconds, with a shot volume of 13 to 26 grams in the cup.
  8. Caffeine Content: Long vs. Short Shots
Contrary to popular belief, the caffeine content in a long shot and a ristretto is the same. The difference lies in extraction time, not quantity.
  9. Grinding and Storing Coffee Beans
Grind beans in 7-9 gram portions for immediate use. Ground coffee loses 65% of its aroma within 15 minutes. To preserve whole beans, store them in airtight containers to prevent the oils from oxidizing.
  10. Sugar or Sweeteners? Go Natural
To fully appreciate the coffee’s flavor, skip sugar and sweeteners. Drinking it plain allows the true aroma and taste to shine.

By following these simple yet essential rules, you can elevate your coffee-making skills and enjoy a superior cup every time. Whether you’re a moka enthusiast or a pod aficionado, small adjustments can make a big difference.

Coffee Terminology Explained: Pods, Capsules, and Moka Pots
Understanding the key differences between coffee-making methods and tools can enhance your brewing experience. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Moka Pots: A classic stovetop method that produces strong, espresso-like coffee. Best for those who enjoy bold flavors and hands-on brewing techniques.
  • Coffee Pods: Compact, paper-based packages compatible with multiple machines. They are eco-friendlier than capsules but less effective in preserving coffee freshness.
  • Coffee Capsules: Vacuum-sealed, single-use containers made of aluminum or plastic. Known for maintaining freshness and delivering consistent results, though typically compatible with specific machines like Nespresso or Keurig.

These distinctions serve as a foundation for choosing the method that suits your taste and lifestyle, whether you’re a moka enthusiast, a sustainability advocate, or someone who values convenience and precision.

Coffee Planet Showcases Innovation and Growth at World of Coffee Dubai 2024

Dubai – Qahwa World

Coffee Planet, part of the Ludlow Coffee Group, made a strong impression at World of Coffee Dubai (21–23 January 2024), held in the city that has been its home since 2005. Following a record-breaking year in 2023 marked by market expansion, product innovation, and a commitment to sustainability, the company presented its largest and most ambitious showcase to date.

The event came during a period of significant growth for Coffee Planet, including the recent opening of a new corporate office, showroom, campus, and café in Abu Dhabi. This expansion reflects the company’s long-standing relationships in the capital and its broader ambition to strengthen its presence across the UAE, the Middle East, and international markets. Supporting this vision is its evolving brand identity and new strapline: “Everyone’s cup of Specialty.”

At World of Coffee Dubai 2024, Coffee Planet unveiled three major product launches:

Ready-to-Drink Cold Brew Range
The company introduced three new cold brew canned beverages: Latte, Caramel Latte (250ml), and Black Nitro (200ml). These products build on the success of its recently launched cold brew concentrate, already gaining traction in key markets, particularly within the HORECA sector. The concentrate offers versatility for cafés, bars, and events, enabling a wide range of beverage creations. The new ready-to-drink cans are expected to expand Coffee Planet’s reach across retail, online, and hospitality channels.

New Single Origin Coffees
Continuing its focus on quality and traceability, Coffee Planet presented a new selection of seasonal single origin coffees. These included three microlots from El Salvador (Santa Ana), Colombia (Hacienda Mallorca), and Guatemala, alongside four new food service single origins sourced from Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ethiopia.

Sustainable Wooden Capsules
A key highlight was the launch of single origin coffees in innovative wooden capsules. Designed to be Nespresso-compatible, these capsules are made from natural wood fibres certified by PEFC and sourced from wood industry by-products. Fully plant-based and produced from renewable materials, they represent Coffee Planet’s commitment to sustainability while delivering a premium coffee experience. Customisation options are also available, allowing clients to tailor capsules to their preferred coffee selections.

Beyond product launches, Coffee Planet created an immersive experience at its stand. Visitors explored a main bar serving popular beverages using advanced equipment, a dedicated brew bar hosting workshops, a capsule display area, and a “Coffee Corner” concept designed for workplace environments.

The stand also featured insights into the Ludlow Coffee Group and its recently launched roastery brand, Jigsaw Coffee Company, which provides private label roasting services for global food and beverage brands and produces Coffee Planet’s full range.

Throughout the three-day event, Coffee Planet hosted interactive sessions, demonstrations, and competitions led by its Campus team and industry partners. Renowned baristas and latte art champions participated, adding energy and engagement to the experience. The company also collaborated with key partners across the exhibition, showcasing its coffees on leading equipment brands and hosting masterclasses.

Jamie Brown, CEO of Coffee Planet and Ludlow Coffee Group, said:
“We were proud to showcase our expertise and latest innovations at World of Coffee Dubai. It was a great opportunity to connect with customers and partners, strengthen relationships, and continue our mission to make specialty coffee accessible to all.”
