Event Date and Location

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) has released updated rules and regulations for the 2026 World Barista Championship (WBC). The championship will take place from October 22 to 25, 2026, at World of Coffee Panama.

These updates aim to improve competition fairness and keep pace with specialty coffee industry developments. The new rules clarify several technical points raised in previous editions and enhance transparency in the judging process.

Key Changes to Judging Rules

The latest round of updates introduces three main changes. First, changes have been made to the water served to judges. Water is a critical element in coffee quality evaluation, and this adjustment aims to standardize tasting conditions for all competitors. Second, the language around the number of espresso shots competitors must prepare for the signature beverage has been clarified, removing any previous ambiguity in rule interpretation.

Third, the new rules allow competitors to override the drink evaluation protocol for the espresso and milk beverage courses by not serving spoons to judges. This change gives competitors greater flexibility in how they present their drinks, leaving them the choice between traditional spoon-based evaluation or alternative presentation.

New Grinder Regulations and Ceado’s Role

The grinder regulations for this year’s championship have seen important updates. Qualified sponsor Ceado will provide all competitors with standardized equipment, offering two approved grinder models: the REV Zero and the E37Z-Naked. Competitors may use up to two grinders and may choose between provided equipment or their personal grinders, as long as personal grinders are the same approved models with original parts only.

All grinders – both provided by the sponsor and personal ones – will be inspected and sealed by Ceado prior to competition. This procedure ensures a level playing field and prevents unauthorized modifications that could give an unfair advantage. Competitors can review full details on grinder selection, inspection procedures, modification rules, and equipment specifications in the supplemental Grinder Procedures document.

Lessons from Jack Simpson, World Barista Champion 2026

By: Sonam Sherpa

What a privilege it was to meet Jack Simpson, World Barista Champion 2026.

I had the opportunity to spend a few moments speaking with him, and the insights he shared were deeply grounding and inspiring. Here are a few lessons that stayed with me:

  • 1. Discipline gives dreams direction

We all have dreams, but without discipline, they remain ideas. True progress happens when dreams are supported by consistent, focused discipline.

  • 2. Compete with purpose

Competition is not just about winning. It’s about why you compete. Having a clear purpose—whatever that may be—becomes the fuel that pushes you through long and demanding training days.

  • 3. Comeback mentality

Imagine reaching the World Barista Championship, finishing as first runner-up, and missing the title by just one point. Instead of stopping, he reset everything and started again from zero—only to return and make it happen the very next time.

  • 4. Building confidence through repetition

Presenting in front of a crowd is never easy. Confidence is built by practice—presenting again and again in front of friends and colleagues until it becomes second nature.

  • 5. It’s okay to make mistakes

Mistakes are part of the process. No one is perfect, and growth comes from accepting that reality.

I asked him a question that had been on my mind ever since he became World Barista Champion 2026:
What was going through your mind when third place was announced, and only two of you remained—just one step away from the title?

His answer was calm, grounded, and incredibly real:
“I was actually preparing myself to accept any result

World Barista Championship Turns 25 in Milan: Applications Now Open

Milan – August 28, 2025 (Qahwa World) — The World Barista Championship (WBC) is marking a historic milestone this year as it celebrates its 25th anniversary at HostMilano in Milan, Italy. From October 17–21, 2025, the global coffee stage will once again spotlight innovation, talent, and passion, bringing together more than 50 national champions to compete for the world title.

What started in 2000 with just 14 baristas in Monte Carlo has now grown into the world’s most prestigious coffee competition. Over a quarter of a century, the WBC has defined modern barista culture, inspired innovation across the industry, and created a platform where champions set the tone for the global specialty coffee movement.

To mark this landmark edition, the World Coffee Championships (WCC) is inviting skilled professionals to apply as Calibration Baristas or Emcees. These roles are essential in ensuring the highest competition standards and delivering a seamless championship experience.

Calibration Baristas support Judge Certification and Calibration events by performing competition-level routines multiple times, helping align scoring standards across the judging panel. Applicants must have competed at least once in a national or world-level competition, possess two competition-ready routines, and demonstrate strong organizational skills and adaptability.

Emcees, meanwhile, take on the role of guiding audiences through the event, ensuring that the stories of competitors and the spirit of the championship are conveyed to spectators both in person and online.

The 25th edition of the WBC will not only crown a new champion but also celebrate the baristas and judges who have shaped coffee history over the past two decades. Audiences can join live at HostMilano or follow the competition online, ensuring global access to the world’s biggest coffee stage.

Applications for Calibration Baristas and Emcees are open for a limited time. More details, including eligibility requirements and deadlines, are available on the official website: wcc.coffee.
