Arabica Coffee Prices Reach New Heights Amid Supply Concerns, Sugar Declines

Arabica coffee continued its upward trajectory on Monday, hitting a new peak for the eighth consecutive session as tightening supplies fueled market momentum ahead of an anticipated production decline in Brazil this year.

Brazil, the world’s leading producer of arabica coffee, is expected to yield a smaller crop in 2025, with adverse weather conditions—particularly excessive heat and dry spells in 2024—contributing to lower output.

On the ICE Futures U.S. exchange, arabica coffee futures closed up 3.05 cents, or 0.8%, at $3.809 per pound, after reaching a record high of $3.8895. The market has surged by 19% since the start of 2025, following a substantial 70% increase in 2024.

Brazil’s 2025 coffee harvest, set to begin in April, was forecast on Monday at 63.2 million 60-kg bags, reflecting a 1.8% drop from the previous year’s crop, according to exporter Comexim. The decline has been attributed to challenging weather conditions. Additionally, Brazil’s national food supply agency Conab projected a 12.4% decrease in arabica coffee output, estimating it at 34.7 million bags, citing unfavorable climatic conditions before the flowering phase, which impacted yields.

Market uncertainty has also led Brazilian coffee farmers to hold back on sales, anticipating further price hikes. Meanwhile, speculative traders have been increasing their bullish positions on arabica, adding to the upward momentum in prices.

Robusta coffee, a more cost-effective variety commonly used in instant coffee production, saw a decline in futures prices, settling down $184, or 3.2%, at $5,534 per metric ton. Last week, robusta reached $5,861, marking the highest level since the contract was introduced in 2008.

In the sugar market, raw sugar futures slipped 0.5% to 19.26 cents per pound, partially weighed down by a stronger U.S. dollar following newly imposed tariffs under President Donald Trump’s administration, which intensified trade tensions. Dealers noted that a generally optimistic crop outlook for the 2025/26 season also contributed to the bearish sentiment. White sugar prices fell 1%, closing at $514.10 per ton.

Meanwhile, cocoa markets experienced mixed movements. New York cocoa futures edged up $15, or 0.1%, reaching $11,002 per ton, while London cocoa declined 0.7% to 8,759 pounds per ton. Market participants noted an increase in cocoa bean arrivals at ports in Ivory Coast, the world’s largest producer. However, exporters highlighted concerns over the poor quality of beans due to inadequate storage conditions.

Oatly and Nespresso Introduce Limited-Edition Coffee Blend for Oat Milk Lovers

Oatly Group AB and Nestlé Nespresso have partnered to launch a new coffee blend designed specifically for oat milk enthusiasts. The limited-edition Oatly Barista Edition Coffee is crafted to complement the taste and texture of Oatly’s oat-based beverage and is exclusively compatible with Nespresso Vertuo coffee machines.

This collaboration caters to the increasing number of consumers opting for plant-based milk alternatives. According to ProVeg, 50% of consumers in the US and Europe, along with two-thirds in Asia-Pacific and Latin America, now incorporate plant-based milk into their diets.

Karsten Ranitzsch, Global Head of Coffee at Nespresso, emphasized the brand’s commitment to personalizing the coffee experience:
“At Nespresso, we’re all about taste and ensuring every coffee lover can craft their perfect cup. With more people choosing plant-based drinks, we’re thrilled to partner with Oatly to offer this specially curated blend.”

Co-developed by coffee experts from both companies, the Oatly Barista Edition Coffee features rich, biscuity notes, enhancing the natural sweetness and creaminess of oat milk. The blend offers cereal-like aromatics, a light body, low bitterness, and a smooth finish.

Launched on January 28, 2025, the blend is available for a limited time in over 15 countries, including the US, UK, China, and Australia, through Nespresso’s online store and retail boutiques.

Toby Weedon, Barista Development Director at Oatly, highlighted the blend’s compatibility with oat milk:
“Oatly Barista Edition brings out the best flavors in coffee, which is why it’s favored by professional baristas and coffee enthusiasts worldwide. We’re excited to have worked with Nespresso’s experts to create a coffee capsule tailored for oat drink lovers.”

This collaboration marks a significant step in expanding premium coffee options for plant-based consumers.

Grind Reports Record Sales as High Street Locations Outperform Pre-Pandemic Levels

The UK-based specialty coffee chain has achieved a 38% year-on-year revenue increase for the fiscal year ending April 30, 2024, and has secured £10 million in funding to expand its café operations, online sales, and B2B segment.

London’s Grind coffee chain has reported its highest-ever annual sales alongside securing significant investment for further growth in its coffee shops, e-commerce platform, and wholesale distribution.

Over the 12-month period ending April 30, 2024, Grind recorded a 38% increase in revenue, reaching £29.7 million ($36.7 million). The company’s high street coffee outlets and online sales each accounted for 40% of total revenue, while its wholesale business contributed the remaining 20%.

Currently operating 11 coffee shops and three mobile coffee carts across London, Grind reported a 13% annual rise in high street sales, with this segment now surpassing pre-pandemic performance.

“The business has rebounded beyond pre-pandemic levels despite the continued prevalence of remote work. We anticipate further growth as more people gradually return to city life,” said Founder David Abrahamovitch in the company’s Companies House filing.

Grind’s digital sales have also been a strong revenue driver, consistently exceeding £1 million ($1.2 million) per month. The brand’s packaged coffee products are now available in 8,000 retail locations across the UK, including leading supermarkets Tesco and Waitrose.

However, increased investment in expansion and marketing has contributed to widening losses. The company reported a 1.1% rise in EBITDA to £3.9 million ($4.8 million), while pre-tax losses grew by 6.5% to £5.6 million ($7 million).

After securing £15 million ($17.1 million) in investment in March 2023, Grind raised an additional £5.5 million ($6.8 million) within the latest reporting period. More recently, it has successfully completed another £10 million ($12.3 million) funding round post-fiscal year-end.

“The business is in a strong financial position and well-prepared for continued expansion in the upcoming year,” Abrahamovitch added.

Grind operates in some of London’s busiest commercial and commuter hubs, including Shoreditch, London Bridge, Covent Garden, and St Pancras Station. During the period, the company closed its Whitechapel location and ceased operations at its Melrose Avenue café in Los Angeles following the conclusion of its one-year agreement with Soho House.

Coffee Holding Co. Reports Strong Financial Performance for Fiscal Year 2024

Coffee Holding Co., Inc. (Nasdaq: JVA) has reported its financial results for the fiscal year ending October 31, 2024, marking its third-best annual performance since becoming a publicly traded company.

According to the company’s latest financial statement, net sales increased by 15% in 2024 compared to the previous year. Gross margins improved from 16% in 2023 to 20% in 2024, while net income reached $2.25 million, or $0.39 per share, reversing a net loss of $835,576, or ($0.15) per share, recorded in 2023.

The company attributed its financial gains to sustained high coffee prices, which remained above $2.00 per pound for most of the year. This price environment bolstered profitability in the wholesale green coffee segment while mitigating the impact of margin pressures in the private-label sector.

Coffee Holding Co. President and CEO Andrew Gordon noted that the company faced challenges in managing pricing adjustments, particularly in response to rising commodity costs. “Even with commodity prices increasing sharply, we had to delay price hikes for our large supermarket and wholesale customers until national brands made similar adjustments. This impacted revenues and earnings in the early part of the fiscal year, but price increases implemented in the latter half of 2024 have positioned us for stronger financial performance in 2025,” Gordon said.

In addition to price dynamics, the company navigated broader macroeconomic challenges, including inflationary pressures, increased transportation costs, and rising healthcare and insurance expenses. Despite these hurdles, Coffee Holding Co. reported a strengthened balance sheet, reduced debt levels, and renegotiated its lease at its Staten Island headquarters, resulting in projected annual savings of approximately $72,000.

Looking ahead, Gordon expressed optimism about the company’s financial trajectory. “Our continued focus on operational efficiencies, cost reduction, and revenue growth gives us confidence in our ability to deliver value to shareholders in the coming years,” he stated.

Ethiopia Plans to Increase Coffee Revenue to 2 Billion This Year

2 billion this year by exporting more than 400,000 tons of coffee.
Sebsib Abafira, President of the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (ECCSA), stated that Ethiopia’s coffee exports are experiencing significant growth in global markets due to the substantial attention the government has given to the sector.

These remarks were made during the launch of Yoya Coffee, a leading Ethiopian brand dedicated to producing, processing, roasting coffee, and training professionals in the field, as it opened its new coffee outlet.
In his speech at the opening ceremony, Sebsib Abafira emphasized that such entrepreneurial initiatives in the coffee sector encourage the enhancement of quality and value addition.

He noted that the prices and appeal of Ethiopian coffee exports are currently seeing a significant increase in global markets. He also pointed out that Ethiopian coffee exports achieved record revenues in the last Ethiopian fiscal year, generating $908 million in the past six months.

Sebsib highlighted that the government’s focus on the coffee sector has been a key factor in boosting Ethiopia’s coffee exports. However, he stressed the need for all stakeholders to intensify efforts to increase the productivity of the country’s coffee.

For his part, Dawit Tesfaye, owner and manager of Yoya Coffee Roaster, said that recent macroeconomic reforms have particularly motivated coffee exporters and generally strengthened the sector. He added that Yoya Coffee is working to promote Ethiopian coffee in global markets and contribute to the growth of this sector, which is one of the country’s major sources of export revenue.

Meanwhile, the official account of Yoya Coffee Roaster stated: “From the first sip to the last smile, we felt the love and excitement from everyone who joined us. Thank you for being part of this special journey—your support and passion for coffee made today unforgettable!”

From New York to Chennai: The Story Behind Beachville Coffee Roasters

Some stories deserve to be told in a way that captures their essence and resonates with the readers. This fascinating journey of Beachville Coffee Roasters was first brought to light by my best friend, Sayed Naveed. After reading it, I felt compelled to share it with our audience at QahwaWorld, but in our own distinctive style. Beachville Coffee’s story is not just about coffee; it’s about passion, resilience, and the transformative power of a simple cup of coffee.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

Divya’s journey into coffee began in an unexpected place—New York. She struggled to find a fresh bag of ground coffee to brew her morning South Indian filter coffee, a tradition deeply rooted in her culture. Unlike the pour-over method commonly found in the U.S., South Indian filter coffee involves a unique brewing process that enhances the rich flavors of the coffee. This challenge sparked her passion and eventually led to the birth of Beachville Coffee Roasters.

Initially launched as an e-commerce platform, Beachville soon expanded beyond the digital world. In October 2020, amid the pandemic, Divya took a bold step and opened a specialty café with an in-house roastery—the first of its kind in Chennai. This move marked a significant milestone, not just for Beachville but for India’s evolving specialty coffee scene.

A Commitment to Quality and Craftsmanship

For coffee lovers, a café’s equipment often tells a story about its dedication to quality. Beachville Coffee Roasters is the first café in Chennai to house a Slayer espresso machine—a sign that the team is serious about its craft. This commitment to excellence is also reflected in the selection of coffees they offer.

While Beachville sources beans from Ethiopia, Colombia, and Honduras, its Indian offerings truly stand out. Each coffee has its own personality, showcasing the diverse flavors Indian coffee estates have to offer:

  • Attikan – Floral, bright, and uplifting.
  • Hippla – A syrupy body with dry fruit sweetness and a jammy aftertaste.
  • Gungegiri – Notes of passionfruit, peach, and honey.
  • Nachammai – Rich dark chocolate flavors with delicate white floral aromatics.
  • Filter Coffee Blend – A blend designed specifically for traditional South Indian filter coffee.

Each coffee bag comes with a thoughtful description, and Attikan’s reads: “Everyone’s favorite coffee. Sweet, strong, and easy to brew.” A perfect companion for any time of day, it embodies Beachville’s mission to bring high-quality coffee to its customers.

Beyond Coffee: A Cultural Hub

Beachville isn’t just about great coffee; it’s about creating an experience. The café offers an extensive menu featuring coffee mocktails and an all-day dining experience that includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Their Instagram is filled with stunning images of pastries, innovative drinks, and carefully crafted dishes that make you wish you were there.

In addition to serving exceptional coffee, Beachville is a hub for the community. They regularly host events, introduce new menu items, and foster a space where coffee lovers can connect. The brand’s ability to merge specialty coffee with cultural authenticity has made it a standout player in India’s coffee scene.

For anyone passionate about coffee, Beachville Coffee Roasters is a name worth knowing. Divya and her team’s dedication to quality and innovation has helped redefine specialty coffee in Chennai. Their journey, from sourcing exceptional beans to crafting a welcoming café environment, is proof that passion and persistence can create something truly remarkable.

The next time I visit India, Beachville will be one of my first stops. Until then, I’ll be sipping on their Attikan, appreciating the craftsmanship behind each cup, and eagerly following their journey from afar.
